Van Jones praised President Trump for honoring the widow of a Navy SEAL killed during a raid in Yemen, saying "he became president of the United States in that moment. Period."

"There are a lot of people who have a lot of reason to be frustrated with him, to be fearful of him, to be mad of him, but that was one of the most extraordinary moments you have ever seen in American politics period," Jones said on CNN.

Jones, a liberal commentator who frequently criticizes Trump, said the president did something "extraordinary."

"And for people who had been hoping he would become unifying, hoping that he might find someway to become presidential, they should be happy with that moment," Jones said.

"For people who have been hoping that maybe he would remain a divisive cartoon, which he often finds a way to do, they should be a little bit worried tonight. Because that thing you just saw him do, if he finds a way to do that over and over again, he's going to be there for eight years."

I only saw bits and pieces of it with the sound on. The rest of the time it was muted. I saw the bit with the grieving wife and even with no sound, I could tell it was an exploitive moment designed to jerk some tears. I am surprised this widow allowed herself to be used in this ugly, manipulative way. Maybe she didn't catch on that she was a prop. Recognizing his sacrifice was one thing. But to bring her there, knowing that the audience in the building AND the bigger one seeing it at home would be emotionally impacted, was another level of manipulation. Shameful is what it was. But the boobs at home watching it probably lapped it up and will ask for more. Until it is their son or daughter, husband or wife sacrificed for tRump's foolishness and fragile ego.

We are witnessing the downward spiral of our nation and I feel powerless to do anything meaningful to stop it. I had hope a few weeks ago that tRump's worst enemy was himself. I truly believed he was on a fast track to impeachment or removal from office via the 25th amendment. Now I don't feel that way. Bannon and Preibus have figured out a way to make this sick turd be "normal". It truly makes me sad to be on this roller coaster of emotions that swings from hopeful to despair in the time it takes a clock to mark off one hour.
