I worked for a Japanese corporation for 10 years and they are NOT touchy feely.
I got to be close friends with a few of my co-workers and I would never even THINK of giving them a hug.
I'm sure Abe is in a constant state of cringe anytime he's around tRump.

(17,021 posts)Very affectionate with family but more, realistic I think, about the difference between an acquaintance and a friend. Is that accurate?

(115,899 posts)that often turns up on lists of things not to do; hugging, even by close friends, is just not done. Other things not to do that Trump does all the time are talking about yourself and showing off, and failing to apologize, even when you weren't wrong in the first place. https://learnjapanesepod.com/the-top-10-japanese-etiquette-mistakes/ Trump is pretty rude in one way or another according to the customs of all countries, but I imagine he's especially offensive to the very courteous Japanese.

Abe is getting hugged here and does not seem bothered.

(28,343 posts)It seems a behavior more suited to other arenas, and I have to ask why you do it here. It's unseemly and I think to the majority here, quite unwelcome.

(32,097 posts)He did nothing wrong. If you think he did something wrong then you are bashing him and that is quite unwelcome.

(47,209 posts)As "proof" the hug was normal. BUSTED!!
Your link was taken from WaPo but somehow got separated from the article that says the opposite of what you were trying to say.
How convenient!

(47,209 posts)You don't actually get to give orders to anyone here. That's not how this works.
We notice you normalizing Trump and trashing Obama.

(32,097 posts)He did nothing wrong. Why are you trashing Obama? You won't cut and paste because you made it up.

(47,209 posts)I never brought up anything negative about Obama but it seems like you tried to above and the link failed.
Really seems to bother you that people think Trump is a complete oaf.

(47,209 posts)It's oft commented what a faux pas and how uncomfortable he makes most world leaders. The pic stripped of all context is very deceptive. Interesting how hard you're working to normalize trump- pretending anyone used he word forbidden? So embarrassed for you.

(65,499 posts)Yet, as it often is with Modi, much of the public attention will probably be placed on something else entirely: the Indian prime minister's impressively awkward physicality.
SNIP
Modi has become well-known for his vigorous hugs and handshakes with other world leaders, displaying a tactile familiarity that often seems to take his counterparts by surprise. The resulting pictures can often be awkward, subsequently making headlines all over the world.

(32,097 posts)It has nothing to do with PM Modi or India. The poster that replied to me tried their best to imply that I had left out language concerning the Japanese PM. That was made up BS which is why they never cut and paste anything. Try again.

(47,209 posts)Or enthusiasm. There's a hilarious pic of Prince Williams hand after he let go of it- and left strong impressions from squeezing. LOL. That pic is from a story that says the opposite of what the poster claims.
Shocking!

(32,097 posts)But we were told by all sorts of internet Japanese cultural experts that touching is forbidden in Japan. PM Abe seems very happy. So you are saying the touching/hugging rule that the internet experts told us about does not apply if someone has a "good relationship" with the other person? Who made that exception?
Why have no MSM outlets that hate Trump, such as the NYT and Washington Post, mentioned this? Do they not know the rule?

(28,979 posts)The posters here are correct asserting that hugging makes Japanese uncomfortable. They are polite though and tolerate what they find cringeworthy.
Abe gave his assistant a look that clearly conveyed his belief that Trump is one rice ball short of a sushi roll.

(32,097 posts)You need to come down to where I went to school, Arizona State, where we have about 1000 Japanese students at any given time. I don't wish to alarm you but they shake hands and even hug -- and yes they initiate it. They clearly have been infected by bad, bad, bad American culture and need someone like you to set them straight.
