They won't have had time to read them thoroughly by the time of the trial.

You'd be surprised how fast those cats can read dense legal briefs.
At a bare minimum, a small army of clerks (mostly young, all very smart lawyers) will read them in great detail, check all cites and provide summaries and recommendations to the various judges, pointing out key areas they should focus on.
