Women's March - Saturday - January 21st, 2017
It began as a spontaneous feminist rallying cry via social media. It has morphed into what is expected to be one of the largest demonstrations in American history a boisterous march about a smorgasbord of progressive issues, and an extraordinary display of dissent on a presidents first day in office peppered with knit pink hats.
A march of this magnitude, across this diversity of issues has never happened before, said Kaylin Whittingham, president of the association of black women attorneys. We all have to stand together as a force no one can ignore.
The Women's March now has almost 200 progressive groups, large and small, signing on as supporting partners. The issues they represent are as varied as the environment, legal abortion, prisoners rights, voting rights, a free press, affordable healthcare, gun safety, racial and gender equality and a higher minimum wage. Men are invited.
More than 300 simultaneous local protests will also occur, across all 50 states, and support marches are planned in 35 other countries, organizer Linda Sarsour said.

Powerful!
May this be the beginning of bringing balance to humanity.
Women, female, feminine - this aspect of humanity (and life) is 1/2 of the power of existence. Time for balance and the healing of life on earth.

(131,698 posts)and it was locked before I could but I kept it up just in case!
There is a little knitting shop not far from where I live that I have bought yarn from, and they are participating in the Pussy Hat Project to offer patterns for knitted "pussy" hats and show beginners how to knit them (which has apparently caused a shortage of pink yarn)!
I know 20 years ago, my mother, sisters, and I particpated in the "Million Woman March" here in Philly.
Maxine Waters, Winnie Mandela, and other prominent black women spoke at the event. They low-balled it at 3/4 million back then -
but really - there should be way more at this year's Women's March events both in DC and the rest of the country given our 1997 march was directed at black women and there was a huge turnout for it.
This year's March will be in the same spot as the one I went to 20 years ago.

(67 posts)I know the lock in LBN was a bummer and this needed to be up. Here it is!

(12,448 posts)I already have the yarn and enough time to make a few.
BumRushDaShow
(131,698 posts)A number of small yarn shops have come up with patterns and/or have been advertising the one from the Project. As I understand it, there are many out there making these right now to give to friends and family and probably to take with them to hand out.
NastyRiffraff
(12,448 posts)and have printed it out. Do you think they'll mind if I show it to my local yarn shop? It's in DC, so we can hand out lots of them!

(131,698 posts)That's how I found out about the initiative to knit these hats! I am on my local shop's email list and in their last update message announcing winter classes they wrote -
Definitely pass it around!

(67 posts)Women in leadership will balance things. Soooooooooo needed!
In contrast the legislature is but 20% women. We need 50-60%.

(131,698 posts)Some folks need to learn to separate the focus of an event, which is often on specific goals & agendas, from the literal title of the event. I.e., if you support the goal and agenda, then just show up and show that support!

(2,419 posts)I'm obsessively following Trump and inauguration -- but I didn't learn much about the women's march until I saw my niece's adorable pink pussy cap on Facebook.
This is not a criticism of the march's organizers. It's just an observation: social media tends to create separate "constituencies" or networks. Perhaps there is a natural tendency toward the much-maligned "identity politics" arising from the media we use, a la Mcluhan.
When affinity-groups create political actions, they should remember to reach out -- as bettyellen just did!
Good luck, pink-hatted protestors!
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)And the ones that don't aren't generally politically active anyway. I know a couple of BOBs (men and women) that were overtly hostile and belittling about it.
Some guys kind of self segregate themselves by wasting all their clicks and likes on their dude centric activities. It would behoove them to expand their circles a bit.
Just saw on FB some weird suggestions that the name should have been changed to be more man friendly and I can't say I think much of that writer if his first assumption about women is that we'd dislike being around men?
philly_bob
(2,419 posts)whether or not you intended it to be.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)I don't buy that bullshit. I asked an honest question, and have no idea where you sensed "hostility" but you're completely full of shit if you deny the dismissive snark in your reply to my simple question.
You lost the benefit of the doubt, Bob.
philly_bob
(2,419 posts)I admire the ingenuity of the tactic, which I suspect will increase news coverage. It's a good news hook.
I resent that you deny me the benefit of the doubt, bettyellen, so let's end this conversation.
Those who oppose Trump must learn to work together. As it is, we are divided -- and conquered.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)But perhaps we both read and heard tone that was not there. Because we didn't like the words chosen.
It happens. I said nothing hostile to you at all. And dismissive I suppose only if you are living in a male-centric bubble, in which case I wish you luck!

(214 posts)I want to say a special thank you to the guy I work with. He knows how important the march is to me. I was suddenly scheduled to work that day. He offered to work for me so I could go. He added to that " If I wasn't working, I would be there". Thanks Evan! I also want to thank a few other guys I work with. They will be there. They believe we all have to stand up and make our voices heard. I am sure I am not the only person that will be there because someone else stepped up to make it happen. To all of them... Thank you, we will make you proud.

(81,962 posts)And the WOMEN shall lead!
Always remember: even GOD Almighty needed a woman to make His greatest Gift happen! He could have sent Jesus into this world with all kinds of thunder, lighting, and splashy fanfare riding on a fiery golden chariot drawn by blindingly-white winged horses and an advance team of archangels playing trumpets, or some such thing. But nope, that evidently wasn't good enough. He seems to have preferred the "good old-fashioned way". And you can't do that without a woman becoming a mother.
Just think about it.
Even GOD has a mother.
And even God needed a mother!
