Petitioners seek Denise Juneau as University of Montana president

MISSOULA -- Outgoing Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau said Friday she may apply to be the next president of the University of Montana.

"I think I have the qualifications and the vision, and I think it's an exciting opportunity," Juneau said.

Juneau is completing her second term as state superintendent. In November, the Democrat lost the race for U.S. House of Representatives against Congressman Ryan Zinke, the incumbent Republican.

Thursday, the Montana Commissioner of Higher Education asked UM President Royce Engstrom to depart on Dec. 31 and said a national search will take place spring semester for a permanent president. Former Commissioner of Higher Education Sheila Stearns will serve as interim president starting January 1.
