Iowa nuns to tour 9 states in bus to protest GOP budget proposals they say hurt the poor

http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/on-faith/iowa-nuns-to-tour-9-states-in-bus-to-protest-gop-budget-proposals-they-say-hurt-the-poor/2012/06/18/gJQAd9QYkV_story.html

DES MOINES, Iowa — A group of Roman Catholic nuns is set to leave Des Moines on a two-week bus tour of nine states to protest Republican federal budget proposals that the group believes hurt the poor and vulnerable.

The Nuns on the Bus tour departs Monday and is scheduled to finish in Washington, D.C., on July 2.

The nuns will visit Catholic-sponsored social service agencies and the offices of Republican members of Congress including Steve King’s office in Ames, House Speaker John Boehner’s office in Chester, Ohio, and Rep. Eric Cantor’s office in Richmond, Va.

Organizer Sister Simone Campbell says the tour is not a response to the Vatican’s recent criticism of nuns as being too outspoken on social issues. Network, a Catholic social justice lobby founded by sisters, is sponsoring the tour.

many in so many institutions, he and the people around him have as their first priority the survival of the institution and preserving traditions, no matter how outdated they are.

I don't recall Jesus telling people that Caesar (aka the government) should be the one to take care of the poor. He did tell the one rich man to sell his possessions and give to the poor, though. I think Jesus cared more about individuals giving of themselves to the poor than counting on an unreliable, changeable leader or government.

Also, Catholic nuns complaining about federal budget proposals hurting the poor and vulnerable smacks of irony to me. How much do those giant cathedrals cost? Those vestments and habits? Those shiny gold, jewel-encrusted decorations and utensils? Jesus and his disciples worshiped in humble abodes and even out in the open air, not soaring cathedral environs, and did not wear anything but their everyday clothes. When Jesus broke the bread and served the wine during the Last Supper, it was while using what I would imagine to be clay plates and cups. I think, perhaps, the nuns should work on reforms within their own churches and worry less about what the government does or does not do.

They don't want to pay taxes; but they would accept helping the most needy if it were done on a volunteer basis? I don't think so. I look at taxes as a form of tithing. They not only help the needy, but they are used to keep this country & its facilities running smoothly.

Maybe they can talk enough sense into "Reagan Democrats" to put President Obama over the top.

When are they gonna learn their place?????

When I saw this on the news, I wanted to hop right on that bus with them.

You go, Sisters! If Christ indeed founded the Church, I'm pretty sure their mission is what He had in mind.
