This teenager was walking for hours to and from work — until a police stop changed his life

https://img.washingtonpost.com/wp-apps/imrs.php?src=&w=1484

So when Cpl. Kirk Keffer of the Benicia Police Department spotted a lone, lanky teenager walking on Industrial Way during the graveyard shift a few Saturdays ago, he was curious. It was after 11 p.m. and dark outside, and the boy was just nearing the highway overpass.

“Usually in the industrial area, there’s no foot traffic, so it was kind of weird to see someone walking around on foot,” Keffer told The Washington Post.

He stopped his patrol car, got out and called out to the pedestrian.

Was he okay? What was he doing out there by himself?

The teenager, 18-year-old Jourdan Duncan, was equally startled at first.

“I was absolutely nervous,” he said. “I thought, okay, um, did I do anything wrong? Is he going to put me in cuffs? I didn’t do anything bad.”

Duncan told Keffer he was walking back to his parents’ home in Vallejo. He had just gotten off from his job at Pro-Form Laboratories, where the teen worked on the packaging line from 3 p.m. until around midnight.

“Vallejo? That’s like seven miles away,” Keffer said he remembered saying to Duncan.

Soon, he had cleared out the passenger seat in his patrol car and offered Duncan a ride home.

"Giant" is a brand of bikes you only get in specialty bike shops. If I'm not mistaken, they are never offered in stores like Walmart, Target, Kmart, etc

I imagine the cop haters here will simply ignore this thread.

He was walking 7 miles each way just to work a job.

That's gumption and initiative.

Chances are he'll go far.

Nice to see the Post covered this as a positive alternative to the other nonsense that keeps happening.

Good for them. Good for this kid! Good for those cops!

Glad it was a good news cop vs AA story.

There are good cops, I've just met very few of them as my interests and theirs don't mesh. Lot's of their kids are on my 10 yr old Grandson's football team where they gather to discuss gun issues.

Heck, I have a couple guns too but I don't obsess over them like those guys do. With them it's .308 this and .44 that. Last time I went to Wallmart to buy .38 ammo for my girlfriend's pistol they were totally out.

Tied several times too but the guy said they just can't keep them in stock. That every time they came in they got cleaned out in a day. "Obama" was the explanation as apparently the ammosexuals were afeared he'd make them illegal any day somehow.

Sorry, didn't mean to start a gun meme on a good news story.

When I was about 27 or so, I was working at a restaurant and got off at 11:30 or so every night. I would ride the bus in Houston and had to stand on the corner in what was then a bad area at midnight and wait for about 30 minutes. Then stand downtown for about 30 minutes and then finally get home about 1 o'clock. Because of all the waiting I figured out that because of the wait and the fact that the bus route went through downtown and was like two sides of a pie, and my destination was actually only about 2 miles I decided to walk instead. I felt safer walking than standing on the corner alone. I walked for a week or so and then I was walking by a junk yard and happened to see a bike with really bad tires but a good frame. Bought it for $30 and then spent another $30 to get tires put on it. This brought a hour and a half bus ride down to 12 minutes. I think walking was taking me 45 minutes.
