They are so happy to scam stuff for themselves, but when they see others doing it, they see it as taxes they pay.
As long as the money goes into their household, it's fine. Teachers, police, firefighters and township workers are taxes.

(53,521 posts)When they talk about "freedom" they actually mean "letting the strong exploit the weak".
The left-over 1% is a tiny group of deluded academics regurgitating Von Mises, Hayek, and Rothbard.

When you read The Road to Serfdom, or see the mini Reader's Digest version or the cartoon pictorial below, it are the Republicans who are the "planners" of society--trying to force people into following their vision of society, regardless of how cruel it is.
It's unfortunately a PDF, so make sure your AV is up to date.

(16,296 posts)Well, maybe not everyone.
My son at one time was an off-the wall Repuke Rush Limbo dittohead ranting and railing against taxes (to the point of not paying them) and government being anti-business, we'd be better off with NO government., etc., etc. Really made me question what I did to raise that kind of thinker. THEN a hurricane hit his community and he was first in the FEMA line and first at the tent getting the blue tarps and water. Thankfully he moved on to saner political ground over the years.

(91,003 posts)That was a bizarre story from several years back that made it on to DU, and it comes from having all-volunteer firefighters. Okay, so the town saves on salaries and the volunteers are heroic, but guess what? They still need fire engines and related equipment. The volunteers don't come with buckets and garden hoses. So there is a special assessment, and you know how some people are chronically late with their bills because they are for instance out of work.
It really stuck in my mind because I have never in my entire life lived in an area that didn't have an actual Fire Department, possibly because in California we know fire doesn't stop at property lines.
This is a great pic and comment.

(65,361 posts)I live in a town where the FD is volunteer, except for the EMT's and paramedics. But, they are funded well enough that the hardware is all top notch. We don't have a special tax for it though. It's just part of the city's cut of property taxes.

(7,409 posts)She skillfully led him down the libertarian yellow brick road, allowing him to paint his weird rosy picture of libertarian paradise.
It ended up being a few million city-states, all in general conflict with each other for scarce resources. No military. No police, no nothing but 'I got mine' behind a concrete wall with a machine gun.
Then she asked him the kicker -- "What happens when the Chinese decide to invade?"
Long pause. "Well," said the simple-minded feller, "that's up to them."
Libertarian paradise lasts as long as it takes for an authoritarian nation to decide it shouldn't. Nature rewards cooperation; whoever practices it survives, whoever does not, does not.
So really, in the end, it's all self-immolation for fun and profit.

It's just amazing to me that people who once supported Sanders could even imagine voting for a Libertarian based on any kind of principle. If you're any kind of progressive, any kind of a decent human being, you can't look at how the Libertarian party thinks society should run without thinking that it's abhorrent.
Blue Idaho
(5,067 posts)How any progressive can look at the anarchy of libratarianism and connect that Sanders is beyond me. In a Libratarian world you are truly on your own. Pretty much the exact opposit of universal heal care, college for all, rebuilding crumbling infrastructure, and a whole host of other issues that progressives agree on.

(13,029 posts)but Libertarians would have us go back to Jim Crow. Although they condemn racism and bigotry in a theoretical way, they believe that government has no business passing or enforcing anti-discrimination laws. They believe that any owner of a hotel, restaurant, store, apartment building or whatever should be able to put out a sign that says "Whites only" or "Jews not welcome". Their "solution" to the problem of bigotry is that if enough people don't like it, they can boycott an establishment like that and put it out of business. Of course, if there are enough people to support a business like that, the Libertarian response is "oh, well".
If you peel off the phony veneer of their platform, it stinks to high heaven almost everywhere.

Vol 40 Issue 16 Politics
CHEYENNE, WYAfter attempting to contain a living-room blaze started by a cigarette, card-carrying Libertarian Trent Jacobs reluctantly called the Cheyenne Fire Department Monday. "Although the community would do better to rely on an efficient, free-market fire-fighting service, the fact is that expensive, unnecessary public fire departments do exist," Jacobs said. "Also, my house was burning down." Jacobs did not offer to pay firefighters for their service.
