(10,602 posts)We had a recall fight in Colorado based on passage of some restrictions. The message was at the time was that Rocky Mountain Gun owners went berserk and apposed ANY restrictions. And they seemed to be in agreement with the NRA. And I have seen internet chatter indicating the NRA wants no restrictions of any kind. Some states have NO background checks. Not sure who they are.

(6,626 posts)NICS background checks are federally mandated. States cannot override them. Most states have no restrictions on private sales where neither party is a federally-licensed dealer and neither party is a "prohibited person." Even gun-unfriendly New York had no such restriction until 2013.

(18,883 posts)those trigger happy murdering racists are the only ones knowledgeable and trained enough to be allowed to carry gunz.

(10,602 posts)We passed some mile restrictions in Colorado and the gun nuts went nuts. They were against background checks and magazine limitations. Remember we had Columbine and the Aurora theater. Harris even tried to get position of an M-60 machine gun from a store in Colorado Springs.

(6,185 posts)And because enough people here get the vapors when you say NRA, you figured that it's OK to just make something up.
Got it.
Ummm, and you can't buy an M60 from a store in Colorado Springs or anywhere else for that matter. Tax Stamps, BATFE and Chief LEO approval required, 6 months waiting periods and a roughly $35,000 price tag might be a hindrance to a high school kid too.
If you want to be a brave anti-gun culture warrior, at least get try to the basics of some of the 22,000 existing gun laws figured out first.

(6,626 posts)The NRA supported the creation of the NICS system in the early '90s, the proposed expansion of background checks in 1999, and the Cornyn bill last year.
Of course the NRA isn't leading the background-check parade, but your hyperbole vastly overstates their opposition.

(6,409 posts)If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.
So I used economics....
Sure, a determined criminal will get a gun somehow, someway. However, he will have to do via the black market where a $250 dollar handgun today would go for $2500 at minimum, which is assuming we aren't proactive at eliminating the black market. If we are proactive, then who knows, it could cost as much as 25k.
A lot of criminals won't have that money laying around so a lot less criminals can get a gun, which will drop the crime rate on deadly shootings.
As for defending yourself, keep a baseball bat or pepper spray nearby. Because its highly unlikely a burglar is going to risk getting caught with a gun that cost him 5k in suburbia whose value of contents in the house he can escape without arousing suspicion will only net him 1k at best. Plus, your insurance company will cover the loss.
The problem is, too many people think in "one liners" and refuse to think beyond that.

(18,874 posts)Where everyone carries a AK47 everywhere. Difference is that they may actually need one there. I don't know anyone here that needs to carry one. Why carry an AK47 when a plain old 357 Magnum will do?

(10,602 posts)I own several guns. They were pass downs from my father and father-in- law. Two of them are WWII vintage and one pistol was apparently owned by a Nazi military officer. They are in firing condition but I have had no interest in firing them. Don't even have any ammo around.
I can understand appreciating the workmanship of weapons and guns. Guns have their place, but it is intimidating when someone is walking around with a loaded weapon on their person. Certainly the person might be a good guy.
But the question is that if you are so worried about your safety that you need to carry a weapon everywhere can you really be trusted. Also if even trained police forces have great difficulty using their weapon and being accurate, does a civilian with limited training ability to be safe?.
