FOX NEWS IN FREEFALL: Hannity, OReilly, And Greta May Leave If Roger Ailes Is Fired
By Andrew Bradford on July 20, 2016
Things may be about to get very messy over at Fox News. It has been reported in recent days that embattled CEO Roger Ailes will soon be pushed out due to allegations of sexual harassment from several women who work or have worked at Fox over the years, and now theres news that some of the networks biggest stars may also bolt if Ailes is given the ax.
CNN Money is reporting this morning that should Ailes be removedwhich is expected to take place this weekthree of the most well-known names at Fox News, Sean Hannity, Bill OReilly, and Greta Van Susteren, have clauses in their contracts which would also allow them to terminate their relationship with the right-wing news channel. All three have been vocal in their support of Ailes.
Which begs the question: How would Fox fare if three of their most valuable brand names suddenly leave and take their services elsewhere? Also, who exactly would hire them and give them primetime slots like they have at Fox News? MSNBC? Highly unlikely? CNN? That also seems a stretch.
Additionally, why exactly are Hannity, OReilly, and Van Susteren defending a man who has been accused of sexually harassing at last a half-dozen different women? Most notably, why would Van Susteren, a woman, be rushing to support Ailes when such charges have been leveled against him?
If indeed Ailes is removed as the head of Fox News and the three big names leave with him, you can expect ratings for the GOPs favorite network to decline precipitously, perhaps leading to freefall and crisis at Fox.
Hey, sounds like a dream come true!

(9,955 posts)...hired at MSNBC or CNN... for ratings appeal. The stumbling block would be money - I'm sure those three are very highly paid. This is also a reason why they would stay at FOX, after negotiating a big pay increase and new non-Ailes contract!
sarae
(3,284 posts)ratings appeal trumps everything else now (pun not intended).
Warpy
(111,256 posts)I don't. Hannity and O'Reilly will likely head to hate radio with occasional forays doing comments for other cable news.
However, I sincerely doubt they'll be out unless they're forced out or carried out feet first.
Their ratings appeal is quite limited. Their demographic is the same as the rest of the Pox demographic and that's the problem for the Murdoch kiddies. They see the old audience dying off. They want to bring propaganda to Gen X.
Ikonoklast
(23,973 posts)The kids know the Fox target audience is dying off and aren't being replaced as the younger gens aren't drinking the right-wing koolaid.
They will need to move to the middle in order to survive after Trump loses as the Republican party fragments between rigid nutcase political and social extremists and pragmatists who want to win elections.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)that, though I'm guessing it might occur over a few years.
Btw, of course those three wouldn't leave out of loyalty to anyone just because their contracts would allow it. They're all sharks. If one leaves it'll be because of changes, though.
BlueEye
(449 posts)Not MSNBC, which has a liberal target audience. CNN on the other hand, has a centrist audience but has also embraced the "partisans on both sides" model, into which those two might fit.
O'Riley will keep spewing his hate at Fox until he's ready to retire. He's too despised to go to another network, and too old to remodel his career.
thesquanderer
(11,986 posts)I'd say MSNBC is not committed to any particular philosophy, and will turn on a dime if they see the right profit potential. They could "mix and match" for a while ("Hannity! Maddow! Fair and balanced for real!" and see how it goes from there.

(14,173 posts)Sure they could keep their Hate Radio gigs, and start one if they don't already have one. But these assholes crave the spotlight. The kind of glittering, celebrity spotlight that only TV can offer. Not to mention the money. Its all a last gasp effort to declare their loyalty to Ailes and the kind of rightwing agenda he pushes for them to follow.

(2,900 posts)and the fact that all three supposedly have them means that they were likely (but not certainly) leaked by Ailes in hopes of saving his own ass. I very much doubt that the three would exercise such a clause, as it is not in their interest to do so to support a serial harasser.

Hannity got bumped out of his 9pm timeslot in favor of Megyn Kelly. Who knows when Greta is on?
O'Reilky is a ratings giant. He is the flagship for the whole network. They will back up the money truck for him.

Heck, I could say all the things they do. Write me a script. I'll play along and make millions $$$ for telling brainwashed idiot listeners what they want and need to hear. Anyone could. But I won't. Fuck Fox. They need to implode.

(233 posts)I heard that too and it is probably true, however, the egomaniacs of Fox will have time to weigh loyalty to Ailes and their multi million dollar contracts with Fox ... I suspect loyalty to Ailes will be strictly in the short term and I will be surprised if they exercise that clause to leave the Fox cash cow.

But if Ailes is fired you can bet all the rumors of these yucks leaving in solidarity will fade away
Multi million dollar paychecks along with big perks, is something they would never voluntarily walk away from.

They will find a way to get their raise.. just like a good NFL Quarterback will hold out for more money. If he is good at what he does, he will likely get it.

(5,954 posts)ie-cut off their money supply. Let's be honest. They, like most of the conservative chattering class are only in this business for the money, which flows freely from their plutocrat masters. They couldn't really care less about the ideology, which is pretty thin to begin with.
Watch, as Rupert Murdoch and his son tell Sean Hannity "Forget Ailes, you're working for us now."
