GOP House Speaker Paul Ryan loves to pretend that the GOP doesnt have a race problem. The 2012 autopsy report from the spectacular loss of the Romney/Ryan ticket to President Obama and Vice President Biden had a lot of so-called minority outreach goals. Clearly, none of those goals have been accomplished. After all, the current GOP standard-bearer, Donald Trump, has run a campaign that is steeped in racism. He kicked off his campaign by calling Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals, he has called for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States, has called women fat pigs and dogs, and accused Fox host and debate moderator Megyn Kelly of being menstrual when called out on this, and a whole host of other things that play to the bigotry that is so inherent in the current incarnation of the GOP.
All of that aside though, there is one very telling photo making the rounds on the internet that perfectly illustrates just how, well WHITE the Republican Party is, despite the wide range of diversity that makes up the actual country. Its a priceless selfie of Paul Ryan showcasing himself with bunches of young republicans, and you wont see one face of color in that grand sea of white. For your viewing pleasure (or disgust) here is the tweet of that photo:

(13,081 posts)The premise was this: until the 70s, Asians in America were split about 50/50, and were primarily of Japanese and Chinese descent. Some of the families had been here more than a hundred years.
In the 70s, what with the US bombing the shit out of Southeast Asia, lots of Asian refugees arrived. They were obviously very anti-communist, so flicked in droves to the Republican Party and especially Reagan.
In the early 90s tbe Cold War is over, there's no reason to worry about the Communists anymore, and things in their home countries have settled down. But the Republicans didn't have anything more to offer than "Liberals Bad."
In 1994, California voters pass, despite great consternation, the anti-immigrant Prop 187. It's mostly aimed at Latinos, but the Asian community keeps hearing "Immigrants Bad! Immigrants bad!"
Combine the with the fact that, despite the myth of being the model minority, there is an incredible amount of poverty in first and second generation Asian families. The Democrats have services and solutions for that; the Republicans have bootstraps.
So in the last twenty years, we've seen Asian voters go from 80%, solidly Republican, to 80%, solidly Democratic.

(180 posts)after identifying the few minorities in the room, the bigger challenge - find a young man without a necktie. One big thing about college aged kids who self-identify as "young Republicans" - they appear to be so uptight. Like they are going to revive the Fifties or something.

Well, I dress for the job I want, at a job interview. I would think that chapters of the Young Republicans and Young Democrats were just social clubs where they network with each other, and volunteer for campaigns. Perhaps meet politicians and media personalities on occasion. I have never joined the Young Republicans or Young Democrats, so I don't know what a club meeting is like. I have seen Young Republicans, in public, overdressed for the occasion, and with a little too much product in their hair.

(45,435 posts)was when the college republicans tried to convince minority males (including Indian, Asian, and Latino) that joining them is a great way to meet pretty blonde women who totally won't take you for granted like those elitist democrats do or be difficult to be with like those hairy feminists. The whole selling point was that republican girls/women are prettier, friendlier and more womanly. They showed the fact that Dinesh D'Souza dated Laura Ingraham as an example.
It was hilarious and sickening at the same time.
I looked for the website but can't find it. Hopefully it's been taken down.

(262 posts)These young adults who probably are going to college don't have a clue that with the Republicon party they are going to be mired in debt before they finish or start college. With Hillary and the Democrats I say it will be a better chance to go without piling up enormous debt before they graduate. What's wrong with these young people?? I really don't care about the race issue here, the more important issue for me is why do they support such assholes like Little Eddie Munster??
