La France est dans une douleur intense aujourd'hui. Nous pleurons nos innocents.

Le nombre de morts ne cesse malheureusement d'augmenter.

France is in great pain today. We are mourning our innocent ones. The death toll keeps rising unfortunately.

A constant, unceasing media barrage does nothing but frighten the bejesus out of people, and give the bad guys exactly what they want.

They will get through this, with the support of the international community. They will keep on keeping on - that's what the French know how to do.

I'm so sorry this has happened in your country. Je suis desolée.

Americans often don't understand the historical resilience and durability of the French. They've been here for over a thousnd years and aren't going anywhere soon.

They are NOT "surrender monkeys" as some RWers like to claim...they simply choose their battles. This battle has only begun.

Merci pour tes pensées sincéres.

This will not stop people in Nice or anywhere in France from gathering in public, mourning, celebrating, socialising, having fun, or whatever they want to do. They do not cower before terrorists. I went to the Marseille gathering after Paris last year. Thousands of people on the Vieux Port, lighting candles, talking, crying, laughing, drinking wine, solidarity with Paris on everyone's lips. That is the French. The idea that they should huddle in their houses in fear never occurred to them.

and something I really love, the attitude of "I've been bombed by a better class of bastards than you lot! Bring it on. Fuck you if you think you're going to change me or scare me or make me less able to live my life the way I want to."

The thing I worry about is increased xenophobia, already a problem in France. In Marseille there wasn't much because it's more a North African city than a French city, but Nice is a bit different and this is two attacks in two years. Will it worsen France's attitudes to migrants/immigrants? I hope not.

and she will cynically milk it for all its worth.

But, saner voices always seem to prevail. The French haven't survived for a thousand years by cowering in fear. Their République was hard fought for and they will not cede it to fascism.
