...that a US Senator was a major-party nominee for president, lost the presidential election, and later lost re-election to the Senate?
UPDATE: Senator George McGovern (D-SD) lost the presidential election of 1972, and lost Senate re-election in 1980. Maybe John McCain would be the first Republican.
