Bomb Threat Suspect Wanted TV Station To Air Rants About End Of The World

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A man claiming to have a bomb strapped to his chest threatened a Baltimore TV station Thursday afternoon, and was later shot by police after walking out of the building.

Police say the explosive device Brizzi claimed to have when he walked into the Fox 45 building in the Woodberry section of Baltimore around 1:20 p.m. Thursday was actually a life preserver rigged with candy bars and the motherboard of a smoke detector. Another device running down his sleeve was meant to look like a detonator.

A security guard with Fox 45 told WJZ reporter George Solis Thursday that Brizzi walked into the station wearing a hedgehog onesie outfit and a surgical mask, claiming he had a bomb.

Ed Brizzi told WJZ his son recently experienced a major shift in his attitude, and was convinced the world was going to end on June 3.

“We really didn’t see this coming. This happened so fast. It’s only been a couple of weeks. We were looking at him, trying to assess him, trying to figure out what to do. He’s 25 years old, so I can’t say ‘You’ve got to go into the hospital,’” the elder Brizzi told WJZ.

Brizzi is currently under guard at Shock Trauma, where he’s being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police say there is a warrant for his arrest. He will be charged with felonies and misdemeanors when he’s well enough and will undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

His father said that his son had a “mental breakdown.” He added that his son lives in the basement of his home and was convinced the world was going to end on June 3. His son was reported upset over the results of the his state's presidential primaries where Hillary Clinton won for the Democrats and Donald Trump for the GOP. Brizzi also tried to overdose on Aleve in 2012. His father, Ed Brizzi told WJZ news, "He’s 25 years old, so I can’t say ‘You’ve got to go into the hospital.’

Why not? There are ways of getting help for the mentally ill that don't require their consent, especially if he posed a danger to himself and others. Wouldn't his young man have healthcare covered by his parents policy until age 26? I don't understand why didn't this father do more to help his son instead of just being a passive observer. Why wasn't anyone helping this young man through the years that his mental health problems exacerbated to the point that he ends up in serious condition at a hospital after being shot by police three times and charged with serious crimes.

Even with good insurance.

Too frequently the first determination of "danger to self and others" is when a police officer decides to pull the trigger.

Actual preventive and palliative social services in the U.S.A. are sparse.

Being the parent of a kid with severe mental illness is one of the roughest things in the world, especially for schizophrenia and other illnesses that first manifest themselves or become much worse in early adulthood.
