Just how bad would a Donald Trump candidacy be for the Republican Partys chances of winning the White House in 2017? The team at the University of Virginias Center for Politics threw its usual caution to the wind on Thursday and took its best guess at how the 50 states and D.C. would break when Electoral College votes are parceled out, assuming the Democrats nominate Hillary Clinton and the GOP nominates Trump. Its not a pretty picture for Republicans.
Writing on the Sabatos Crystal Ball website, Larry Sabato, Kyle Kondik, and Geoffrey Skelley summed up the results this way: Election analysts prefer close elections, but there was nothing we could do to make this one close.
The Crystal Ball analysis shows Clinton with 347 votes (she would need 270 to win) and Trump with only 191.
A key point about the Sabato teams analysis is that in a Trump v. Clinton matchup, every single change to the map favors Clinton. The Center on Politics rates states on a seven-point scale, with Safe, Likely, and Leans ratings for each party, and a Toss-Up category in the middle. All 14 changes either moved toss-up states into the Democratic column or signified a weaker GOP hold on states in its column.

Stop freaking out about Trump having a chance, and stop using Trump as a boogeyman as a silly argument to sway voters away from Hillary to Sanders.
Hell, I'm a Sanders guy, but it's getting silly around here. Trump hasn't got a chance no matter who wins the Democratic nomination. Period.

(7,107 posts)Clinton can in no way lose to Trump or Cruz or any other GOP nominee the republicans pull out of their asses.
Nor can Sanders lose to any of them.
It's silly fear tactics.

(22,336 posts)Either one of them would beat Trump or Cruz easily. Very easily.
There will be very little crossover without Bernie. Her platform is just too far right for most Dems. Her take on war is too much like round three *. She has currently announced that her campaign will be hitting back hard on dissent and has hired people to police this. It doesn't look good.

(1,656 posts)You are wrong - no republican would ever vote for Clinton (except the oligarchy).
Independents won't vote for Clinton either.
Sanders, on the other hand, would win against any republican...

(10,857 posts)You know how the Republicans can win the election, with "win" in air quotes?
By stealing the nomination from Trump, or finding someone else to run as a third party, and then use in-place vote theft mechanisms to split off 78 electoral votes from the Democratic candidate so that nobody wins an electoral majority.
Then the election goes to Congress, and to protect themselves, Congress will decide not to hold a vote, and the Republican Speaker of the House (probably Paul Ryan) will inherit the White House by default on January 20, 2017 without any vote at all.
Never forget that we are dealing with criminals. Criminals always have a chance, because they are not bound to ethical behavior or the law. And there is a hell of a lot of money riding on this, so we should expect them to try.

(13,776 posts)I'd still rather have him than Cruz. But I used to think that Trump just wouldn't be able to stop himself from being so obnoxious and mean and unpresidential and that he would make a fool of himself in the general election.
Now it sounds like maybe he actually can control himself. I can't find the article I'm thinking of now, but the writer said that his speech after the New York primary sounded much more sedate and presidential. (I didn't watch it because I assumed it would be another infomercial about steaks and bottled water.)
I'm sure I'm being ridiculous to worry, but who would ever have dreamed he could have gotten this far? I suppose his support from racists and bigots and idiots in the primaries is very different from what he could expect in the general election, but still. He's a long-time professional at being on TV and presenting the image people want to see....
