CoolXHamster.com has been refusing to serve anyone from North Carolina since 12:30 p.m. EDT, Monday.
Instead, users with a North Carolina IP address are just seeing a black screen on their computer no porn.
The extreme measures will stay in place until North Carolina repeals House Bill 2, a law passed on March 23 that effectively prevents cities and counties in the state from passing rules that protect LGBT rights.
What will all those Republicans do now that one of their primary sources of....inspiration...has been taken away from them, dear readers?

(20,822 posts)and even funnier. Then again, it's not like republicans don't already have their sources of, well, ahem, "inspiration", to use the OP"s phrase, in that regard.

(13,444 posts)There were all sorts of odious measures in this bill even though "the bathroom thing" is what is receiving all of the attention.
If the internet can be a positive source of an economic boycott, then by all means, I say let it drive public policy. It certainly cannot be worse than what Republicans are doing across America.

A HERETIC I AM
(24,382 posts)Good for Hamster, but they are but one of dozens of "free" porn sites, so this move is, just like you said, symbolic.
Again, good for the management of the site. Poll after poll after study shows the largest consumers of internet porn are the very red states.
And BTW, don't ask me how I know any of this. I am as pure as the driven snow.

(3,919 posts)Lots of brand names, very few actual companies.
I think it is genius for the porn industry to shut them out.
Have a friend from college that is a freelance film industry worker in NYC (that's not a euphemism, he mostly works for USA and HBO, sometimes NBC...but he's an independent contractor, not on the payroll.) and like most people in that industry, he has occasionally taken day-gigs working on porn sets...it pays the rent when other gigs are hard to come by. (He's not a performer...he has one of those banal jobs that has to be done on any film shoot regardless of the content of the film; he's worked everything from porn to network TV to film sets to taped court depositions. Pretty much the only difference according to him is that there are more naked people around and the pay sucks on the porn sets.)
You see all these porn companies, content-producers...but at the end of the day, they're all owned by a small handful of groups. The same is true of the streamers. It's pretty much the only way any of them can stay in business with how much free porn and content theft and the general ubiquitousness of porn has cut into the bottom-line profits.
As an example, Pornhub is also RedTube, YouPorn, Tube8, PornMD, Thumbzilla, XTube, Gaytube, Pornhub Gay, RedTube Gay, YouPorn Gay, Tube8 Gay, PornMD Gay and XTube Gay--all of which are run as separate subsidiary companies and separate websites...but all the paychecks say Pornhub on them.

(20,822 posts)hilarious. Hubby heard me laughing my ass off, and then joined in heartily when I told him. Yes, it's true that it's largely symbolic, since, as another poster pointed out, porn is hardly rare on the innertubes. But it's still effective in its own way and funny as hell.

(22,074 posts)Republicans always want companies to have the freedom to pick and choose their customers and they should embrace this decision by XHamster.com.
It was wonderful for American's civil rights when PayPal pulled 400 jobs from North Carolina. Likewise, the movie studio Lionsgate relocated the filming of a new cable TV series out of North Carolina resulting in the loss of another 100 jobs. Let's see how the North Carolina Republicans react to these decisions by businesses.
My expectation is that they'll either remain silent or bathe in hypocrisy.
ladyVet
(1,587 posts)Judging by how he acted in response to the announcement, he seems to not care at all about people losing job opportunities, because Paypal takes people's money from all over the world with worse laws.
I don't know how he responded to the Lionsgate thing, but I'll guarantee you that anyone with any sense realizes it's not just the lost jobs, but the other money that would have been spent in the community that was ripped away.
Of course, there are sales taxes and property taxes to raise, so the state will get their money, mostly from the poor and working class who can't afford to pay it.

(1,154 posts)I actually have used this site for research. I know that sounds corny but it is true. When I wanted to get ideas for how to sound both males and females, I went there. Whenever I want anything - prostrate milking, sounding, CBT, I always go there if none of my friends are available. And, truthfully, I am somewhat ahead of the curve where my friends are concerned so I usually learn new things and then have a teaching session. This sucks.

(423 posts)If the NC legislature passed a law blocking pornographic content, these people would be shrieking at the top
of their lungs about "censorship" (yeah, I know, 1st amendment restrictions only apply to the government).
I really don't give a fuck one way or another about what Xhamster or any other business or individual chooses
to do in NC, but this move by Xhamster is meaningless unless it generates some fiscal harm to the state.
I mean seriously, if NC were to hold open public meetings, town hall debates regarding the issue, who is going to
stand up and oppose the measure because they can't get Xhamster anymore?

(28,017 posts)That the purchase of porn in hotel rooms always increased incredibly whenever the Baptists, Christian Coalition or Moral Majority had a convention. It was so clearly correlated, and incredibly profitable for the hotels, that they actually spelled out the details, tracking just how much porn viewing increased whenever the mopes came into town.
The MM or CC, or whatever they called themselves then, threatened to boycott any hotel that offered pay per stroke video. That backfired on them something fierce, if I recall. It started their long, slow, but well deserved self-destruction.

But that son sure took a wrong turn in what he got his grubby hands on. I wonder how his (cough cough) rehab is coming. And if he's raped anyone lately who is NOT a family member.
You are correct about the tubes. One provider's decision cannot keep all porn out. In fact, the Chinese came up with ingenious ways to get around intertubes' blockages.
