He just asked Kasich, who didn't give an answer to the question but instead said "it would never happen."

(11,995 posts)You have lots of Republicans who don't want to vote for Trump, but don't like Hillary either. A "unity" ticket with a Republican as veep could make pulling the lever for Hillary a lot more palatable to disaffected Republicans.
LiberalElite

(11,995 posts)Which is why a strategy like this could work.
I don't see it happening, though.
If only Hillary had more appeal outside the base, there wouldn't even be a need to worry about this kind of thing.
LannyDeVaney
(1,033 posts)she isn't adding a Republican to the ticket and she doesn't need any more appeal to destroy Trump in the GE.
She already has more votes than ANYBODY else running - appeal "outside the base" is not, and will not, be her problem.
thesquanderer
(11,995 posts)She is seen unfavorably by about 53% of the population.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/clinton_favorableunfavorable-1131.html
She is seen favorably by about 83% of Democrats (i.e. Hillary's base), who make up about 29% of the population.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/188096/democratic-republican-identification-near-historical-lows.aspx
With only 17% of Dems viewing her unfavorably, in order to reach 53% overall unfavorability, that means the population outside the base (i.e. independents and republicans) is a whopping 68%. That's more than 2-to-1 unfavorable outside the base, 2-to-1 unfavorable among 71% of the population!
And this problem is uniquely hers. As has been mentioned many times before, Hillary has the highest unfavorables of ANY candidate from EITHER party. Historically, candidates with unfavorables over 50% don't win.
In this case, Hillary will be blessed with an opponent who will also be widely disliked. But it will not be a cakewalk for her. So whatever she can do to increase her appeal outside the Democratic base will be helpful. Otherwise, you're left counting on her getting votes from people who don't like her, on the basis that they like the other option even less.
This is one of the reasons many of us feel Sanders would be the stronger candidate in November. But that's unlikely to happen, so that leaves us with the question of how to make a Hillary as successful as possible.

(11,995 posts)That's good news for Hillary. Though with both of them having unfavs over 50%, there's going to be a good bunch who will feel like they're choosing between death by poison vs. death by hanging. They may just stay home.
VP selection may be important for both of them.

(2,474 posts)It could work but Kasich has too much pride to humble himself like that and deny himself any shot in the future.
It'd work for Hillary. Not for Kasich.

(115,878 posts)Even if McCain had been interested, I'm sure the Dem PTB would have told Kerry - not just no, but hell, no. If Hillary wants to guarantee losing the votes of the women who have supported her so far, all she has to do is choose the fanatically anti-choice Kasich. Won't happen, no way.

(59,506 posts)things. He did meet with McCain, after a McCain staffer brought up the idea as a way to unite a badly divided country. It never went anywhere - McCain floated the story to puff himself up.
If you really want an example, McCain really did want Lieberman.

(31,464 posts)Really...if we're going to have two corporate whore running the dog and pony show, why the hell not let Drumpf drive the clown car into the ditch? The only real dif between Kasich and the other clowns is that Kasich knows how to behave in public. Beyond that, he's as evil and vile as the rest of them.

This country is changing so rapidly, white women like me, and old, white people like our fathers, and white men like my husband are soon to be in the minority, if not already. The country is changing. I tell our daughters, their generation will save us.

(6,346 posts)Fact that Kasich and Rubio both came up could be taken to further a party realignment where democratic conservatives and the more liberal republicans and neoconservatives on foreign policy join, and a trumpis nationalist populist party takes working class folks with 1/2 the republican party and pulls in peace activists because of its isolationism. Not my idea ok? Don't shoot the messenger.
That said there is lots of unhappy folk talking about a new home.so something could happen on one side of the aisle or maybe both.
If that doesn't work then the people are just plain nuts as everyone here is saying.
