Last edited Fri Mar 11, 2016, 01:52 AM - Edit history (2)
He had that handgun for over a decade and tbe only time he felt the need to use it was to fight off his own demons.
UPDATE: It was the same gun his then six-year old son once obtained from their bedroom closet. Thank God he wasn't another casualty.

(1,168 posts)There's something really wrong with our society when it is so much easier to turn to a gun than to get help in other ways.

(5,790 posts)Second, we tend to dismiss suicide victims as victims of gun violence -- but guns make suicide very easy.

(1,098 posts)..when gun nuts try to point out that the majority of our annual gun deaths are suicides instead of homicides.
Oh, don't suicides matter?!
'Well, if someone wants to kill themselves, they'll find a way.'
No, actually, if you swallow a bottle of sleeping pills, ingest poison, cut your wrists, or even hang yourself, there's always a small chance someone finds you in time and you'll survive the suicide attempt. Then maybe you can get the help you need to stop feeling suicidal.
Meanwhile, a suicide attempt with a gun is almost always successful. There are no second chances.

It's a very sad and senseless thing.
We never saw it coming.
Everyone was expecting my mom to kill herself, because she's one with the sever bi-polar disorder.

(10,345 posts)It is a proven statistic that those who own guns are more likely to do this. Because it makes the decision way too easy.

(1,898 posts)Over time, when you begin to regain your bearings, I hope that you will consider joining the movement to ban firearms in the United States. Yes, we have to address the ability of citizens to protect their homes. However, on balance, outside of law enforcement, guns do more harm than good. Many of our leading allies, such as the United Kingdom, ban firearms and have just as much domestic tranquility as we have.

I had a friend who nearly did this to herself. Her husband took the guns out of the house for awhile, until she got better.

(14,040 posts)On a personal note, this is why I gave up my handgun years ago. I struggle with depression on an almost daily basis and I certainly don't need easy access to a gun.
