That was a short-lived 1990s phenomenon, since closed for lack of interest. Except, peculiarly, in a little time warp here on DU.

For those who want to understand what's with this "third way" term: There is a relatively small population of people on the far left who want to see themselves as not only "the true left" but as the only ones standing up for the common man. But they don't want to see themselves as a fringe element but as big and powerful, a righteous majority force that will sweep the nation into agreement with them and off to a glorious, enlightened future.

To this end, they insist everyone who doesn't agree with them is actually a closet conservative, a sell-out to "corporatism" and, evil of evils now, capitalism. I.e., a "third wayer," the slur they use that term as.

That would actually include almost half of America's voting age population, virtually the entire Democratic Party and the entire liberal population, but cognitive dissonance is not a problem. The majority isn't materializing, but they believe.

They refuse to admit that there is actually a whole, bigger liberal movement occurring, where there is supposed to be nothing... They are the only righteous, uncorrupted ones with the only answer and the only candidate who can save America. (From the rest of us.)

For understanding the rest of the left, and those on the right because they also have the vote, maybe start by reexamining the graph below? Please note where the candidates lie ideologically. This was in 2012, explaining ahead of time why Congress would get nothing done. As you all can see, there is no third way, only my way or the highway.

And here's another. Try to find our "third way" politicians in this one too. It shows roughly where most analyses put the two parties now, severely polarized -- more than the typical Twitter user. That blue is Democratic congressmen.

horizontal and vertical axes, etc. Okay: Please explain where all those "third way" Democratic congressmen are hiding in those graphs. I can go grab another few if you like.

BTW, I could have mistyped 2005 for 2016 and the point would have been valid. Going on about "third way" is sounding more like "keep cool with Coolidge" than even "From Hope to Higher Ground, Huckabee 2016" or "Lincoln Chafee, Fresh Ideas for America." At least those are from this century.

I am a lifelong liberal and a progressive Democrat, Bob, who is tired of the constant insults and lies about who we are and what we stand for.

There is no way to quantify precisely how "Liberal" or how "Conservative" a given politician is. A quick check does not even reveal what exactly that first chart is supposed to represent. I would like to point out that it is entirely possible for both parties to drift leftward or rightward in unison, while simultaneously appearing to be more partisan than before.

The only site I see you linked to in that post with the graphs is the Washington Post, and that link appears to go nowhere in any case.

Edited to add: I see that that second chart, which may be linked to the WP, lists the author's source as "author's elaboration from Twitter data". If it is possible to be less scientific than that I am not sure how. This only serves to illustrate the point I was making, which is the utter futility of trying to objectively measure where a politician falls on some arbitrary scale. Not to mention the inherent problem of trying to accurately illustrate anyone's overall philosophy by placing them on a single axis scale, like numbers on a number line.

a newish group out of Stanford U. While you're at it, look up 2016 candidates of any race ideology. You'll see some of the ones I didn't copy in. Also, some that are propaganda are biased enough to be obvious at a glance.

Self-identification is not relevant here.

The DLC/Third Way/New Dems etc. are still around in one form or another and have been for almost 40 years.

This has been documented extensively on these forums.

Go do some research and try again.
