'This is not a joke': Cape Breton offered as refuge from Trump presidency

http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/this-is-not-a-joke-cape-breton-offered-as-refuge-from-trump-presidency-1.2781169

If Donald Trump wins the upcoming U.S. election, Cape Breton Island is ready to welcome Americans looking for refuge in Canada.

Sydney, N.S. native Rob Calabrese launched the tongue-in-cheek website, "Cape Breton If Donald Trump Wins," on Tuesday.

A website encouraging Americans to move to Cape Breton if Donald Trump becomes president is starting to get serious inquiries from U.S. residents.

The website has since amassed about 10,000 hits and Calabrese said he has received serious inquiries from Americans about life on the island and Canadian immigration requirements.

There is some history here. The United Empire Loyalists were a group of Tories who moved en masse to Nova Scotia after the American Revolution. Of course, as the guy from whose Facebook page I ripped this down points out, that analogy equates the vulgar talking yam with George Washington!

......for people from California. Kind of like the mass of Syrian refugees who discovered that trying to live in Norway weather was worse than ISIL. Fear not. If Trump is elected, I think California will probably succeed.

I knew I had it wrong, but in all honesty, another "more pressing" matter distracted my attention. So I just hit "send" evacuated.

With climate change coming on strong, Cape Breton could end up being like Bermuda. A good idea to buy property now.

Cape Breton is a center of Gaelic culture; it has its own style of fiddling, and ceilidh (Celtic jam sessions) abound.

It's not quite at the end of the world; the "metropolis", Sydney (pop. ~30,000) has a small airport with several flights a day to Halifax and one to Toronto. There is also a bus to Halifax and beyond; alas, only one a day (two on Fri. and Sun.), and the schedule is set up so that you'd arrive in Sydney from the smaller towns late at night and have to leave at 8 the next morning!

Historically, the main industry has been coal mining, which would explain why they need people.

edit: Oh yes, Sydney has a hockey team, in the Quebec juniors.

Canada would hardly seem the place to escape the pernicious influence of Calgary's favourite son, eh?

I was just discussing this with my hubby a few days ago. I thought it would be a wonderful idea if there were countries willing to offer refuge from the batshit cra-cra train if the Great Obstructionist Party wins in November.

Hopefully more countries will follow Cape Breton suit.

It'll get pretty crowded quickly. Sydney, NS is a nice enough town, though - wouldn't mind visiting it again.

Wait - instead of all of us moving, why don't we just send Trump (or whoever will be the GOP candidate) to somewhere remote?

When Dubya was selected by the Supremes in 2000, Ms. Bigmack and I went to Vancouver, BC to talk to the folks there about immigrating to Canada.

They were very polite, but informed us we were too old. They said something about their health care system absorbing more "mature" people.

I think 15 years later, they would just laugh at us.

I do understand that lots and lots of capital to invest greases the skids, thought.
