Obstruction in this appointment will bring a focus like no other on their TOTAL OBSTRUCTION of the President for all these years.
And they will have ZERO leverage with a newly elected President Sanders or Clinton.

(35,015 posts)It might be electoral suicide, but that doesn't mean they won't try to do it. That's a long time to run out the clock, especially with the Court short-handed.

(11,799 posts)The GOP candidates are still running against Obama. They can't let Obama appoint another pro-baby murderer to the SC, it'll just push more of the base into Trump's campaign.

(7,769 posts)It's fraking ridiculous to suggest a sitting President cannot or should not appoint a Justice.

(2,883 posts)But it's the job of the Senate to consent to that nomination and I don't see them consenting to any nominee President Obama brings forward.

(45,319 posts)Kennedy confirmed Feb 88, six months and a week or so from pillar to post, including the Bork failure. So it would be a marathon of obstruction as backdrop to election 2016. It becomes their entire job and constant subject matter.

(15,805 posts)Gerrymandering will keep them in office, the lamestream media is not to be trusted as the corrupt offshoot of the godless-commie-librul elites so everything they say is a lie. Any other criticisms won't even register when their goal is successfully blocking Obama's nominee.

(3,795 posts)It's a hugely winning platform.
Obama needs to appoint someone who will overturn Citizens United, and if the Republicans block his nominations then the Democrats had BETTER use that to retake the Senate and keep the Presidency.
There's basically no excuse here.
Martin Eden
(12,864 posts)And would it be electoral suicide for the Dems to do so?
Flying Squirrel
(3,041 posts)They'd never block it. We know this about Democrats. And the Republicans would call for their heads if they tried, and then the Dems would cave.
Sad state of affairs we have here. Hillary better not win the nomination or they'll definitely drag it out because they (rightly) think they can beat her.

(19,537 posts)As it will be locked up 4-4 and the progressive justice side won't allow such a decision this time around.

(3,469 posts)Do they really want to go into an election with the Presidency, Senate and Supreme Court on the line? Voters will turn out in droves, and when that happens, Democrats win. Add to that the moderates and Independants who who be turned off by the obstruction and you're looking at a potential landslide.
If they were smart, which, of course, they are not, they'd use their leverage to get Obama to nominate a moderate. Otherwise, they risk losing over this issue and ending up with a Supreme court whose newest member is chosen by Hillary or Bernie and confirmed by a Democratic Senate. Hmmm... Go ahead and block it assholes.
