GRAND RAPIDS, MI Dematic North America announced it will relocate its Grand Rapids manufacturing operations to its factory in Monterrey, Mexico, resulting in a layoff of about 300 blue collar workers.
The move will occur over the next few months and be complete by September, the company said in a press release issued Tuesday, Feb. 2.
The company designs and builds automated systems for warehouses, distribution centers and other sites with material-moving needs.
"The relocation of manufacturing activities will impact approximately 300 positions in fabrication, assembly, warehouse, and plant administration," the announcement said. The company said the decision came after discussions with the United Auto Workers union, which represents the plant's blue collar workforce.
