A woman has been left devastated after her four-month-old kitten died from brushing against lilies she had in a vase.
Elizabeth Mackie, 38, bought Mr Mistoffelees, known as Misto, to cheer herself up after her mother died from a stroke.
But she didnt realise lilies were poisonous to cats, so when someone gave her a bunch of the popular flowers she left them on the window sill where the kitten liked to sit.
Now she is calling for the flowers to come with a warning sticker so other cat owners dont suffer the same grief.
When she found her much-loved kitten covered in orange pollen, she shared a picture on social media for advice as it wouldnt come off.
But she was horrified when people commented to warn her that it was deadly to cats.
Vets rushed the animal into surgery, but sadly it was too late and Misto died later that day.

(13,776 posts)What a horrible and incredibly sad shock that must have been. Losing a pet to something so ordinary yet so out of the blue like that must have been shattering.
I had no idea about lilies either, and I'm sure we aren't alone in that.

(18,868 posts)Lilies and mistletoe are very toxic. Also holly, daffodils and amaryllis.

(14,177 posts)Food too. A lot of people share food whether it is right or wrong they do it, some human food is toxic to deadly for pets.
You would think flower shop owners would just do this voluntarily. I mean FFS if I bought a plant that killed one of my precious furballs you can bet everyone I know would know that I wasn't warned about that.

(7,107 posts)It's now gotten to the point where everything you buy is plastered with bunch of warning labels.
I guess chocolate will be now have a big yellow sticker warning it's dangerous for dogs.
Many plants are dangerous to something so this plant warning label idea will spiral out of control quickly.

(50,271 posts)I decided a long time ago not to take any chances so I don't bring cut flowers into the house other than zinnias and marigolds from the garden (note: there are some unsafe marigolds, but the common garden marigold is okay).

(3,261 posts)It's a good thing I hate plants and cut flowers. Still, my cat has been at my mother's, who does have flowers around sometimes and I had no clue she could have been in danger. I hope Misto's death is not in vain and it helps to raise awareness of this issue.
