Michigan woman gives birth after being shot, set on fire

By Tammy Stables Battaglia, Elisha Anderson and Megha Satyanarayana, Detroit Free Press

DETROIT – A woman who was abducted outside a suburban home, shot and set on fire over the weekend has given birth to a baby boy, authorities said Tuesday.

The 22-year-old woman, who was nine months pregnant, gave birth around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, about 12 hours after going into labor, said Louis Galasso, deputy police commissioner in Warren, Mich. She was being treated for burns to her back, torso and face at a Detroit hospital after the horrific attack early Saturday.

According to Galasso, hospital staff have not disclosed the condition of the mother or child.

She was in stable condition Sunday and police Sunday said that an ultrasound performed after the attack showed that the fetus appeared to be fine.

Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith is considering whether to charge the baby's father and a man who was living with him with causing harm to a fetus, Galasso said.

Both men have already been charged with attempted murder (or rather the local equivalent, "assault with intent to murder&quot and kidnapping.

the vessel and not of concern. And compassion and concern for the baby would cease upon its birth.

Certainly the assailant(s) should be charged with harming the woman as well.

In Canada and the UK, there's this lovely phrase: incarcerated at her majesty's pleasure. It means they lock you up and forget about you until some monarch or other remembers you're there. Maybe.
