That tinge of strange smoke once smelled mostly in the high seats at rock shows has become commonplace in parts of America where voters have legalized marijuana.
A Washington Post survey found that in some city wards nearly 70 percent of people smell marijuana smoke at least once a month during their perambulations and 1 in 3 people smell it every day, just a year after the city legalized it for recreational use and personal possession, though not sales. People arent as discreet as they were before it was legal, a 21-year-old D.C. resident named Wuan Smith told the Post.
Indeed, Americas growing experiment with legalized recreational pot has literally changed the atmosphere around a drug that has for decades been one of the top reasons for arrests in the US.
With pot out of the shadows in some states, the direct exposure to smoke has led to conflicts. Colorado, which in 2012 was the first state to legalize recreational marijuana, has seen odor complaints rise, with 30 percent of such complaints now regarding pot in Denver.

People might as well get used to the odor, since it's going to become a lot more prevalent everywhere over the next 5 years.

(15,090 posts)I could never understand the attraction of something that smells like someone set a moldy bale of hay on fire. I don't care who smokes it as long as they don't smoke it around me.

(15,189 posts)The taxes it's bringing into their states and cities. Wear a mask if it bothers them that much, or just stay home.
Igel
(35,309 posts)In spite of the taxes it brought in.
And a lot of people agreed with the complaints. So smoking near entrances, open windows, in apartments and condos, near intake vents was banned because of the smell even before second-hand justifications were found. This goes back 20 years or more.
Now such complaints are good and well founded, protecting their rights.
Now they're not.
Depends on how we feel about the substance involved, not on any actual principle involving rights. Except our own to do exactly as we please without regard to any other person, dead or alive.
Tobacco advocates with the same contempt for others had the same response: they could wear a mask, close your windows, stay at home, or just stop breathing if it bothers them, screw 'em. Just don't let other people get between me and my precious-s-s-s.

(35,773 posts)Many people have serious issues with various odors, and marijuana when smoked leaves a strong odor. We need to figure out how to balance that reality with its public use.

(111,261 posts)It needs to be relegated to the great outdoors, the way tobacco smoke is in a lot of places.
I can't imagine being in an indoor space where both are being smoked. Ack!
(and I'm 100% for legalization and a total end to the stupid WOD)

(2,047 posts)You'd think growers would be eager to develop some non-fragrant strains, especially now that it's on the brink of going mainstream & competition is strong. It is a minor annoyance, after all, or at the very least, indiscreet.

(11,769 posts)I don't think I can get used to it. I make sure any guests who partake, know they'll be smoking outside. There's NO smoking of any kind allowed in my home.
I have been wanting to try edibles for pain management, but there's no way I could ever smoke the stuff. I know some people think smoking weed is a medical cure-all, but it's not for me.

(12,194 posts)You can start to smell it 3 to 5 miles outside downtown denver on the interstate, at least sometimes.
Not the smell of it being smoked, the smell of it being grown.
Doesn't really bother me.

(47,953 posts)About 6 months in, people moved into the next apartment over. Really heavy Smokers. The smell came under the walls, even after taping the floor-wall joints and any joints we could see. Was frickin miserable. Was happy to leave even though I loved the location.
There are many ways to partake that don't involve fumigating your neighbors.
