NYT article today sums up the 2012 War on woman - followed by excellent comments

The Campaign Against Women

Despite the persistent gender gap in opinion polls and mounting criticism of their hostility to women’s rights, Republicans are not backing off their assault on women’s equality and well-being. New laws in some states could mean a death sentence for a pregnant woman who suffers a life-threatening condition. But the attack goes well beyond abortion, into birth control, access to health care, equal pay and domestic violence.

I live in a very small town where most of the residents are poor, 33% of the teenager girls between 15 and 19 have gotton pregnant, 26% of the population is dependant on the federal government, and they vote Republican. Why do all the women I know in town vote Republican? Because they don't know anything that is in the news. They think Republicans mean a strong military and they don't like abortions. Even though most of the women I know had their first child as a teenager, they want the same thing for their daughters. They are so happy and so proud of them when they get pregnant at 16. People really don't seem to want anything different for their children than they had themselves. Lots of babies. Different fathers for each baby. Become a grandma at 32 because your 16 year old is pregnant. If you talk about the war on women, they stare at you blankly because they don't know anything they haven't heard from their minister. or their current boyfriend. Vote Republican but live on government aid. And before any commentors think this is a racial issue, the town I live in is almost totally white.

The Republicans who have the power, those that are in Washington and the rich who put them there and tell them how to vote, are unhappy with how the world has changed. They are threatened by women, especially successful ones who think, talk back and vote. They are making laws to put women back in their place. There's a similar level of frustration with the growth and increasing power of the minority population as expressed in their hatred of President Obama.
The good news is women vote and we care about other women, not just those of privilege. Let's get together and send a united, female message that you can't treat us this way by voting for Democrats in November.

Women voting for Republicans is just as illogical as the so called Log Cabin (Gay) Republicans, an oxymoron if I ever heard one. You give away your dignity and personal liberty in return for a promised economic myth, which in the end benefits only the rich and powerful coorporations. If it sounds simplistic, it is also the Simple Truth. There is only one issue for me when it comes to Presidential elections: who will appoint the next batch of Federal Judges, especially to the Supreme Court.
