WASHINGTON — Sen. Joni Ernst’s proposal to cut off federal funding to Planned Parenthood failed to advance Monday.

The Iowa Republican’s legislation was prompted by undercover videos produced by anti-abortion activists that showed Planned Parenthood officials discussing in detail how they collect fetal tissue from abortions. The videos also showed the officials discussing financial terms for donating that tissue to researchers.

Republicans said the videos show that the organization has broken laws that prohibit selling that tissue for profit or altering the way an abortion is performed in order to collect it.

“Planned Parenthood, the nation’s single largest provider of abortion services, is harvesting baby body parts,” Ernst said on the Senate floor. “The American people are shocked and horrified by the utter lack of compassion and disregard shown by Planned Parenthood for these women and their babies.”
