Dental practice belonging to controversial big game hunter Walter Palmer completely locked down. All shades drawn.

(3 posts)As a vegan, I find it hypocritical for non-vegans to get all upset about this lion, while eating animal products involves cruelty to animals everyday.

There is a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge difference between eating meat and what this fucking prick did for "sport"...

(666 posts)I grieve for Cecil the lion as well, but the animals you consume had lives and felt emotion and pain, and I don't see why it should matter that one had a name and the others didn't.

(20,805 posts)The fact he had a name doesn't enter into it.
I ate bits of a pig called Pinky once. Very tasty too. But he wasn't tortured for 40 hours, skinned and beheaded.

(1,036 posts)Pinky was not tortured for 40 hours, he was tortured his entire life. Penned up and fed for a single purpose ... to grow big enough to eat.
Pretty sure he was skinned, and most likely beheaded as well.
Sorry, but a caged animal for life being raised for the sole purpose of food stock is not even close to an animal that lives in it's natural habitat. I don't like trophy hunters, but comparing caged animals to wildlife thinking the caged animal is better is nonsense.

(3 posts)The difference is that we justify the torture & killing of farm animals because we think they taste good. So in both cases, we're talking about our personal pleasure.

(37,748 posts)It can take a nuance not readily available to the irrational or dogmatic mind to differentiate destruction of life merely for entertainment; a concept Albert Schweitzer was easily able to find in his desire to sanctify all life.
"I find it hypocritical for non-vegans..."
No doubt, we often find what better assuages our own righteousness at the expense of others.

(7,365 posts)One difference is meat eaters don't get their jollies from smacking a cow in the head with a hammer. If the consumption of meat was done in a sustainable, humane way then few would argue. So THERE IS a way to consume domesticated farm raised animals in a positive way (if the practices were changed). There is NO way to spin the canned slaughter of a natural predator playing a viable role in his ecosystem. The two ARE different.
The reality is that there presently isn't humane slaughter, & many would argue that it is an oxymoron. Is paying someone to do it any different from doing it yourself? And the "jollies" may come from the pleasure of eating, rather than the act of killing, but it makes little difference to the animal.

(7,365 posts)Friend of mine on Facebook ranted in defense of this guy....complete with the stock "people are dying" in Zimbabwe meme. I let him have it, but he called people like me (us) stupid, ignorant, enviro-nazis, etc...I am in a fantasy football league with him and 11 others like him. I am thinking perhaps I should remain in Pittsburgh and let them have their own fascist draft.
