-which is explained by the 'Dixiecrats' who had not yet left the party -and many of them eventually did so. But the historical record is what it is -and shouldn't be glossed over.

A more accurate cartoon would show conservatives (rather than the Republican elephant). Of course, there isn't a readily-identifiable 'conservative mascot'.
