Man takes two years to figure out his dogs are black bears

At what point do you realize that your beloved puppies are actually bears?

When they start growling? When they steal your picnic basket? Or maybe almost immediately, when they stop looking like small dogs and start looking like bears.

For one Chinese man, it took two years to decide that something was distinctly un-dog-like about Spot and Fido. Wang Kaiyu, a villager in the Chinese province of Yunnan, purchased two "puppies" while on a trip in Vietnam. He described them as "lively, not picky about food and friendly with humans."

After some time went by, he realized they were behaving "strangely," although the bears would probably beg to differ on that description.

Regardless of his pets' unusual habits, Kaiyu continued to love and care for the "dogs," giving them daily grooming sessions.

Kaiyu realized the harsh and hairy truth when he saw a wildlife protection promotion regarding Asian black bears, two years after buying the animals.

Since the bears are listed as a class II protected species, Kaiyu decided to contact the authorities and let them know about his unusual predicament.

In an effort to ensure the animals receive the best care, the dogs-turned-bears were moved to the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre of Yunnan. Staff at the center say the boy and girl pair arrived in good health and are adjusting well to their new living situation.

and would rather have an easy meal out of a Hefty bag than have to forage.

I imagine those two bears, raised from babies, turned into pretty good "dogs," although they wouldn't hunt. See: lazy.

I'm glad the wildlife refuge got them healthy and in very good shape. That doesn't happen often. Owners put them into too small cages when they realize how big and rambunctious they're getting.

I prefer to go to the supermarket for my food rather than hunt or grow it.

My family used to go camping in northern california, and one year some bears came down into the camp area. They knew exactly where to look for food. They would look inside cars for coolers, and if they saw one they would break in. The rangers said the mother bear would lift up a cub into the "bear proof" garbage cans so that the cub could throw the food out. I guess they tried relocating the bears away from camping area, but they always made their way back. Which ultimately ended in the bear being killed at some point. That goes back to your point of them being lazy. Once they learn how easy it is to steal picnic baskets, it's hard to get them to go back to more natural ways.

(Not pictures of my Maine Coon, but of other Maine coon cat's that endured this embarrassment).

Yes, they are as pissed off about it as you are when you pick them up from the grooming shop.

At least the woman that brought him out when I picked him up had a conspicuous bandage on her shoulder and announced that he was a very bad kitty.

Long before I had any idea it had gotten so bad, I went outside and it was dark and I was like "Look at the kitties" because my cat and the cats in the area are tabbies.

Oh boy, they weren't kitties.
