That genie was out of the bottle a while back. You might as well try to regulate which way the wind blows.

(26,549 posts)And they're even up to a printed gun that can fire four shots now!
Somehow, I think the "real" guns are a bit more of a problem.
Did you know that lots of high-end color printers run software that refuses to accurately print currency? Golly, I wonder if such a thing could be adapted to 3d printing....

(785 posts)Of course this wont ever be a problem (he says not looking 5 years into the future).

(26,549 posts)The rest of the gun is made "the old fashioned way".

Also, firing chambers are a problem, but the barrel fails first.

(Btw, before this goes further, I don't support banning parts.)

(20,709 posts)You'd think that with these 3D-printed guns, people in the UK and Canada and Europe and Australia and Japan would be shooting each other just as much as Americans.

(20,709 posts)year until this 3D-gun things takes off. I'm betting it never will. But even if it does, there are still many thousands of lives to be saved in the mean time.
And besides, if the 3D-gun thing is so easy, I'm sure you won't mind having to print your gun rather than buying one at the store.

(785 posts)The culture in the U.S. is far different than the U.K.
Do you REALLY think Texas or other like state is going to allow anything like that? Yes, Maybe in New York or LA, but never in West Virgina or Utah. You can get that out of your pretty little head right now.
By the time you made any culture change, everyone would have a 3D printer on their desk and a gun is a click away.

(20,709 posts)the tens of thousands of people killed every year. So instead of sensible gun laws, we have mass shootings.

(13,598 posts)"Is it going to happen?" and "Would it be a good thing if it happened?" are two completely different questions. Both of them are very easy to answer - the answers are "definitely not" and "definitely", respectively.
So don't fret, thousands of Americans are going to go on dying needlessly every year, but no-one is going to take your gun away.

(785 posts)Also, ask yourself. If this kid who shot up a church didn't have that gun handy, you really don't think he wouldn't have done exactly that... Made some home-made bomb and tossed it in? He was crazy, and he aimed to do crazy things. Not much was going to stop him unless someone knew in advance of the plans.

(5,169 posts)In the 1970s, Emmanuel Baptist Church was a large church, one of the largest churches in the United States. The church ran buses all over the Pontiac/Detroit area. During my time at Emmanuel, the church operated 80 buses.
One of the bus riders was a young man name Abraham.
Abraham was a walking contradiction. He was a brilliant, crazy, mentally ill young man.

One day there was an explosion at the church. Abraham had built a bomb and brought to church. He carried the bomb into the restroom and, whether accidentally or on purpose, the bomb detonated. It was the last strange thing Abraham ever did. The bomb blew Abraham to bits. One man who helped clean up the mess said bits and pieces of Abraham fell from the drop ceiling.

Police Say Bomb in a Church May Have Been Planted in '79
AP
Published: April 30, 1985
A maintenance worker spotted the pipe bomb Saturday above a ceiling panel in the basement recreation area of Emmanuel Baptist Church, said Sgt. Gary Johnston of the Pontiac police.
He said the bomb was probably placed there by Abraham Roberts, who was killed in October 1979 when a bomb he was handling in the church exploded and blew out a wall.
Mr. Roberts, who was 25 years old, was a member of the church who had a history of mental problems and apparently made the bombs in retaliation for being barred from worship services because he was disruptive, Sergeant Johnston said.

(37,364 posts)the future of killing others has been saved and they are made better people for it. Thre is no purpose for thatcgun han to kill another person.
I am weary to the bone of seeing all the ways weaponry and the mayhem they inflict are justified.

(38,362 posts)This is the U.S.A..
You don't need to make a gun yourself, the market is saturated with them.
It's easier to get a gun in the U.S.A. than it is to get a gram of cannabis.

(80,708 posts)So it's pretty much a moot argument anyway.
If we couldn't get the most modest sort of background check legislation through after a school full of 6 year olds was shot up... it's just not going to happen.
The people arguing over it- from all sides- are fairly well wasting their time.

(36,437 posts)Plenty of shit that's easy to produce is regulated and/or illegal. It's trivially easy to make methamphetamine, for instance, from a chemical point of view. It's easy to grow cannabis. Nevertheless, you get caught doing it and you're going to prison in many states.
Here's how simple it is: you 3D print a gun, you go to federal prison for five years.
Of course, we won't pass that law because the Congress and 100 million dupes are complete tools of the gun manufacturers, but the fact that one can 3D print a gun is neither here nor there.
How fucking stupid are these people?

That seems a bit of a contradiction.
3D printing of gun parts seems like it would hurt the bottom line of the manufacturers, not help it.
This seems like it would be a gift to manufacturers:

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
