Has the whole world gone crazy?

Increasingly I feel that I am living in a world that makes no sense. Whether it is beheadings in the Middle East, or right-wing, and, in some cases, neo-fascist parties being elected in Europe, or our own tea party lunatics, I find it hard to believe that I am living in the 21st century. It wasn't supposed to be like this. Do other people feel as bewildered and horrified as I do???

Unfortunately, some changes are jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

A global left-wing movement better start getting organized to fill any power vacuum that may arise or we could see people like that take power here in the U.S.

However, in this country the right wing has become more crazy since an African American became President.

The media has also become more adept at scaring the shit out of people for ratings.

I don't buy their bullshit and neither should you.

In many ways, it is the 'same old story' told many times throughout history. We shall see if the same pattern emerges in this case too.

I'm just astonished it's held together this long without a nuclear holocaust.

If you feel like the crazies have taken over the asylum and you're being swept along against your will, you are far from alone.

I don't know if it is a function of my advancing age.

Some things ebb and flow over time.

Some things have gotten better, and it may be that we tend to take improvements for granted, which skews our perception.

It does seem as if political discourse has become unduly toxic. To a large extent, political disagreements used to be disagreements among people who were, in a broader sense, at least on the same team. Now, it seems that actually getting anything done gets bogged down in pointless ideological nonsense that don't have much to do with the practical issues of self-governance.

....(and I'm sorry to have to tell you this)....the whole world has most likely always been crazy.

Meeting of the Old Hippies, Sad Cafe, midnight tonight, BYO.

"The Sad Cafe"

Out in the shiny night, the rain
was softly falling
The tracks that ran down the boulevard had
all been washed away

Out of the silver light, the past came softly calling
And I remember the times we spent
inside the Sad Cafe

Oh, it seemed like a holy place,
protected by amazing grace
And we would sing right out loud, the
things we could not say
We thought we could change this world
with words like "love" and "freedom"
We were part of the lonely crowd
Inside the Sad Cafe

Oh, expecting to fly,
we would meet on that beautiful shore in the sweet by and by

Some of their dreams came true,
some just passed away
And some of them stayed behind
inside the Sad Cafe.

The clouds rolled in and hid that shore
Now that Glory Train, it don't stop here no more
Now I look at the years gone by,
and wonder at the powers that be.
I don't know why fortune smiles on some
and let's the rest go free

Maybe the time has drawn the faces I recall
But things in this life change very slowly,
if they ever change at all
no use in asking why,
it just turned out that way
So meet me at midnight baby
inside the Sad Cafe.
Why don't you meet me at midnight, babe,
inside the Sad Cafe.

What I find most horrifying is the prevalence of hatefulness and the sheer love of destruction that seems to be animating so many people both here and abroad. There is some comfort in knowing that I am not the only person who thinks that lunacy has become ascendant.

no fairness. no justice. no concern for the landbase on which we depend. a dismal looking future. not a view i share with my kids, with whom i try to keep an upbeat and optimistic demeanor, but what i think privately.
