Usually this speech is reserved for some up and coming politician. I heard that the guy who gave the keynote address in 2004 went on to a real good career.
But I think we should do something different this year.
I'd like to see the keynote speaker be a GM or Chrysler factory worker from Ohio or Michigan. Not a UAW boss, but an ordinary rank and file factory worker whose job was saved by the auto rescue.
Obviously, the person selected would have to be at least a competent speaker, and willing to accept having his/her personal life poked into by annoyed rightwing bloggers and Fox News journalists. A background check would probably also be a good idea (don't want a keynote speaker with a couple of scrapes with the law in their background, for ex.). But I think this is a great idea, if I do say so myself.

(15,882 posts)Somewhat different from mine. I was thinking maybe an investment banker to say how much better off we are because of the how this government propped up their millions of dollars in salaries and bonuses and didn't provide staffing to investigate their fraud, backdropped by the new people driven into poverty in the last couple years, or the tens of millions who are working a job with lower wages than they were 10 years ago. (Have to vet them, as you said, but there are tens of millions of the working poor to choose from now). Put the kids on the front row, especially the ones that depend on the school lunch programs for the only meal they will get that day. The video could run pictures of foreclosed homes (there are 2 million who have not made a payment in 2 years, as many as 6 million coming over the next 4 years - probably have to cut that a little). And everyone could swipe an EBT card to give them a meal for 1/3 of the $4 a day that food stamps gives.
And then tell everyone how much worse it could be without all this progress.
Yours would probably be a little more uplifting.

Then talk about the effect Romney's attack had on him. An attack launched because Romney decided the victim shouldn't have his hair "that way."
Let that guy address Americans and ask who they want to lead America.
