Today, I was asked a direct question and gave a direct answer:
I believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.
I hope you'll take a moment to watch the conversation, consider it, and weigh in yourself on behalf of marriage equality:
I've always believed that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally. I was reluctant to use the term marriage because of the very powerful traditions it evokes. And I thought civil union laws that conferred legal rights upon gay and lesbian couples were a solution.
But over the course of several years I've talked to friends and family about this. I've thought about members of my staff in long-term, committed, same-sex relationships who are raising kids together. Through our efforts to end the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, I've gotten to know some of the gay and lesbian troops who are serving our country with honor and distinction.
What I've come to realize is that for loving, same-sex couples, the denial of marriage equality means that, in their eyes and the eyes of their children, they are still considered less than full citizens.
Even at my own dinner table, when I look at Sasha and Malia, who have friends whose parents are same-sex couples, I know it wouldn't dawn on them that their friends' parents should be treated differently.
So I decided it was time to affirm my personal belief that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry.
I respect the beliefs of others, and the right of religious institutions to act in accordance with their own doctrines. But I believe that in the eyes of the law, all Americans should be treated equally. And where states enact same-sex marriage, no federal act should invalidate them.
If you agree, you can stand up with me here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002668025
Thank you,
Barack

And yeah... I think it is important... I think it's fucking HISTORICAL...

Looks pretty bad... and INEPT!

Frankly... I doubt it.

But then again...
THAT... is the Cheap Suit aspect of this...

(8,571 posts)I would hardly call coming out in support of marriage equality "charity".
I will play along though...IF that Young Child, or an Elderly Man or Woman needed "something" such as a Walker or Cane in order to more easily cross that Dangerous Intersection due to a disability, you bet I would try and raise funds if they needed it.
BUT since that analogy doesn't really fit here IMO, what I will say is, President Obama will need money to counter all the bigots out there in the way of Ad time. The swiftboating will be enormous on this issue. Let's just face it, it is going to take money to counter the other side. Another way I look at it is, it's just another way of getting the message out. You can't tell me that every single person in the campaign email database was aware of what happened today. People can CHOOSE to donate, just like they can CHOOSE to not donate OR I suppose they can CHOOSE to ignore the overall message. Just as you can choose to unsubscribe.

(12,335 posts)So, if you're angry that they didn't wait a week to ask for donations...well, then you just acted the same way.
It's your choice to donate if you want and if you can afford it...if you can't, then don't. There are plenty of other ways you can help to re-elect President Obama. That's what we're all trying to do now, right?
FDR was a wonderful President, an intelligent man, and an excellent politician. That's why he was able to use Fireside Chats to his advantage.
Good luck, and I hope you feel cheerier tomorrow!

(15,445 posts)all the communications and social networking tools that BHO does, I suspect he would have used them just as effectively and relentlessly to reach his electorate.
What about FDR exploiting the media of the time (radio, newspapers and poster/billboards) to russle up moral and financial support for the war effort, not to mention for his four elections?
Weak historical analogy. Predictably gratuitous criticism.

But just so ya know...
My 82 year old mom, Dem, voting precinct captain - retired, saw that e-mail today after the initial news reports, and said... "Really... they are gonna put this out on the same goddamned day???"
And as you can tell... in the opinion of the two of us... it steps on its own historical meaning.
Yet... she's 82, I'm 56...

It was in an envelope containing a message thanking me again for my support and again suggesting not only how much to contribute but, also---(yippee!)---yet another family photo! My granddaughter (almost 17) suggested I use the return envelope to send my family photo as a thank you message.

(19,768 posts)I appreciate Obama's statements on the matter, and his evolution, and his personal belief that gay marriage should be legal (albeit leaving that decision to the states).
For a sitting president to take such a stand is awesome and historic, but to solicit donations just hours later based on it strikes me as a bit crude as well. It makes the whole thing seem as though it could be simply a political ploy in an election year. (Actually, to go a bit further, I'm thinking those who fought against NC's Amendment 1 would have appreciated his statements a few days ago as help in their efforts).
At any rate, you're taking heat for expressing what I consider a mildly skeptical view, and I hate to imagine this country without skepticism of our politicians, so I just thought I'd chime in with a bit of support for your OP.

When I left teaching, because our own Union cut our throats... I stood up and gave a speech on how the Union got snookered ... because what seemed as a "Great idea" actually screwed everybody in the Union.
I resigned on the spot... by words (signed the papers later), and walked out of the hall to a standing ovation...

And are you one of the ones who wailed about how the Republicans were dominating the talking points and Democrats were too stupid to go on the attack? I was. Well, President Obama is dominating the talking points now, right out of the gate, and Mitt, who has been campaigning for months is now left desperately playing catchup as he chokes on Obama's dust.
It's all about seeing the glass as half full or half empty in a Presidential election year.
