911 calls alert police to man transporting puppies in cage on roof of SUV

Four terrified puppies strapped in a cage to the roof of a moving van are rescued by police after dozens of 911 calls
The puppies were being transported by an Ohio Mennonite family of six
Wendell Steiner said he had offered to bring the puppies to his wife's family in Pennsylvania because his father could no longer take care of them
He said he was unaware it was illegal to transport animals on the roof a car
The puppies were handed over to police, who let family go with a warning

The cage was covered on three sides with a blanket but its rear was left exposed.
Beitzel said that when she asked the father why the dogs were not riding in the car as well, he responded that there wasn't room because he had 'far more important things to put in the car, meaning his children'.

for whom this was not the first thought upon seeing that caption.

Followed, in my case, by wondering if the driver could get off by saying that he was training the puppies for lives with the super-rich.

When Romney took himself out of the 2016 race, her big regret was that she'd miss the dog-on-roof story.

Now she has a hook for one final Seamus column.

I imagine their young lives were already fraught with peril, and would they would have found nothing better at their destination. At least now they will find good homes with people who will love and spoil them.

Seriously, I moved over a thousand miles with several animals in the tiny cab of a moving van.

No room my ass.

We were a family of 6 with our dog, the cat, and a bird, that went through several moves together. Sure it was crowded with all of us inside, but the thought never occurred to my parents to put our dear pets on the roof of our car.

Fact is I needed them more than my critters did.

Moving is stressful enough, I can't even imagine putting such sensitive creatures on the roof.

and that often gets to bad puppy-mill conditions

but this seems to be more a situation of thoughtlessness than dog-laundering

Our only worldy possessions were in the back of the truck. We'd made reservations ahead for each overnight stay and called ahead to make sure the motels would take a pet deposit. They all did and we were refunded. It seems unnatural to put animals on the roof and it's not a matter of legality, it's about empathy. Guess they voted for Romney and thought it was cool.
