The last Southern state to lack an openly LGBT elected official was Mississippi but that changed when Southhaven mayor Greg Davis came out this month.

(23,156 posts)I'm not aware of any openly gay elected officials in my state, New Mexico, which either proves it's no big deal here or perhaps I haven't been paying attention.

Santa Fe praised by gay magazine
Santa Fe makes a lot of Top 10 lists when it comes to travel and tourism. Now, the state's capital city has a new distinction.
According to a travel piece published in The Advocate, a national gay and lesbian magazine, Santa Fe is the second "gayest" city in America.
The Advocate reports that RainbowVision, a retirement community for gays, lesbians and others in Santa Fe, "has raucous drag shows at the Silver Starlight Lounge."
Mayor David Coss called The Advocate's accolades fantastic. He said Santa Fe is a tolerant community and that includes being gay-friendly.

(23,156 posts)I had somewhat noticed that gays and lesbians seem to do well here, and I've marched in our local Gay Pride Parade. RainbowVision, alas, has had a bunch of problems recently, which is too bad. It seems to be something of a power struggle among the people who run it. There have been articles in the paper recently, but they do read as if quite a bit is being left out.

(20,819 posts)I tell you, to find that my state of South Dakota is one of them. NOT.
No big surprise there at all. I'd be surprised if anyone serving the state had the courage to come out of the closet, they'd likely be run out on a rail. I'm sure there are gays serving as elected officials, they just haven't identified as such.
