Protesters want the Landmarks Commission to force them to remove the sign. Protesters Want Landmarks Commission to Fine Church With Anti-Gay Signs View Full Caption

HARLEM — A city-issued violation could force the controversial Atlah Worldwide Church to take down its controversial sign — which often displays homophobic and racist messages — after multiple failed attempts by critics who tried to pressure the church to put a stop to what they called hate speech.

The church on 123rd Street and Lenox Avenue — which is a landmarked building — was hit with five violations Thursday for altering the structure without permits, according to the Landmarks Preservation Commission

Atlah's owner must appear before the Environmental Control Board at 9:30 a.m. on May 4. If found guilty the judge can issue fines until the violation is corrected, Olivo said.

The owner can try to get a permit to retroactively legalize the work that is in violation, she added.

Being the type of person I am, I would be getting myself into trouble. There's a Southern Baptist near me and we are always at odds over their marquee. The only saving Grace is the Lutheran Church next to them always counters their marquee with their own. And they are much smarter at it.

I can understand the opposition of homophobic messages but I think throwing in "racist messages" as a little bit of a stretch. From my understanding he is against gentrification which is destroying black communities.

This Manning is a full tilt bigot of many facets. Religious, racial and sexual orientation bias permeates his work. Must be one hell of a congregation.

I see homophobic for sure, I see bigoted but calling it racist is a stretch since the comments are directed at the white community.
