(53,661 posts)Googled it to find what the other groups were, and found out that all five were donuts:
And even cops joke about their five basic food groups: glazed, jelly, powdered, chocolate frosted, and ghetto, the donuts that are left over after a long meeting of the command staff.

No wonder they're so hyper at times.

(12,977 posts)But their set up was fairly crude and primitive. The Canadians have obviously gotten it much more refined.

(53,661 posts)They are both extremely crappy jobs most people would not want or aspire to have to begin with. The way that action was handled reinforces their seige mentality by seeing the sense of privilege by the taunters. I thought they were going to offer them donuts by hand as I saw some do last year. Dragging it on the ground is not offering food.
One woman in the video was trying to get the focus back on the 1%. Bringing it down to the individual level is a right wing tactic. They always question the morals and motives of others in the most negative way.
There is safety in a group, especially when the other side is ordered to stand there and take it, like the Queen's guards at Buckingham Palace. Which is essentially what these guys are.
What a crappy job, too bad many job seekers lack the education and opportunity to do better. And that's what is meant by the saying that you can hire half the poor to kill each other. There are times that I don't see much hope for humans. But then, I also know many wonderful, smart and giving people.

(1,741 posts)I'm extremely disturbed by a lot of things police forces have done lately, but I really hate divisive "us vs them" politics. Police can be on our side, and often are. Police unions are part of the labor bloc, and police in general often favor sensible gun regulations. They were also part of the first responders we acclaimed after 9/11. Police officers can be Democrats, just as Christians can be, just as the wealthy can be, just as rural folks can be, just as troops can be. Let the other side be divisive. Our side should be about unity. Besides, I see no good coming out of throwing more gasoline on an already tense situation as shown here.

(36,281 posts)Ah, and you managed to bring 9/11 into the conversation too! How clever.
The cops thug for the 1%. They do the domestic dirty work for the greediest and least compassionate people on the planet. They've been progressively militarized because we the people are increasingly "the enemy." The few I've known as individuals are, to a person, bigoted, conservative, violent, and reactionary. We called them pigs in the 60s and 70s, and they've only gotten worse. Now that epithet insults the noble porker.

(1,741 posts)Individual police officers can surely be Democrats/liberals/progressives, and even as a bloc, it's not unusual for police groups to support Democrats on certain issues. Did you follow the collective bargaining battles at all? Do you know that police have opposed Stand Your Ground laws? But police have to follow orders, just like soldiers do. I think it goes against the Progressive spirit to villify/mock an entire profession, whether it's lawyers, schoolteachers, or police officers. Pragmatically, I think it's dumb when the left pushes away potential allies. Morally, I simply think it's not a very nice or enlightened way to think and behave.
Anyway, what do donuts have to do symbolically with cops "thugging for the 1%"? Donuts, when used in reference to police, typically stand for ineptitude and inefficacy. Are the protesters saying the cops should get off their keisters and be more proactive in their "thuggery"? No. Do you think people will see a picture like this one and be reminded of police pepper spraying peaceful protesters? No. The average, uninitiated person is simply going to think protesters are immature jerks who hate cops (until they need one) and don't even take their own protests seriously.
And if the police really are all as singlemindedly dedicated to protecting the 1% and beating down protesters, as you say, why would protesters antagonize a large, armed group of them for no nobler purpose than a lame, childish taunt?

(33,982 posts)They are there to counter the protests, so game on. This is non-harmful.
I know some cops that would be laughing their asses off anyway.

(221 posts)I'm a cop and was part of Occupy Lincoln and don't believe I've ever met a colleague that was part of the 1%. Since when did Occupy abandon the 99% message and decide to focus on taunting police officers instead??
Shame on Occupy Montreal and disappointing that so many DU'ers are giddy as schoolgirls over this.
