My wife and I have been fans of “Grey’s Anatomy” since the first episode. But last week’s episode was different. It didn’t just hit home. It seemed to rip a chapter right out of our own book.

If you haven’t seen it, beware of the spoilers ahead!

The episode is perfectly titled, “All I Could Do Was Cry” and sums up my night watching it. If you follow the 11th season of the show, you know that April and Jackson were expecting a child. But when doctors find out their baby will die shortly after being born, the option to abort the pregnancy comes up.

My wife, Stacey, and I lived through that exact moment. We were notified of our son Konnor’s rare chromosome disorder, Trisomy 13, in the 21st week of pregnancy. Doctors called him “incompatible with life,” meaning he would die shortly before, during or after birth. We, too, were given the option to abort.

FULL story at link.

through because their child had been born with a fatal chromosome problem. She was talking to me because she knew about my child. I told her what had always guided my decisions - I had been called to care for my daughter and give her the best life she could have for as long as she lived. I told her to tell them they were God's choice for that child.

Weeks later they asked to take the little guy off life supports and took him out of the hospital to set on the hospital lawn with them. He died quietly in their arms. My friend thanked me for giving them the courage. I know it was not me - they had the courage to face what was.

not to see it, most of the time.

And I agree with him that that episode of Grey's Anatomy was very powerful.

And this is exactly what choice is all about. These people, both the real and the fictional ones, chose to carry the pregnancy to term. That was their choice. Another couple who chooses abortion is not wrong, has simply made a different choice.

I will say that I have never been faced with such a situation in my own life, and I do not know what I would do if that happened. But I do know I have no right to judge what anyone else decides.
