DES MOINES, Iowa Presidential stage newcomer Scott Walker, the conservative reform pit bull who inspired death threats from the left, has become the one to watch in the race for the Republican nomination a year out from the Iowa caucuses.
At 15 percentage points, he leads a big, tightly packed field of potential contenders in a new Des Moines Register/Bloomberg Politics Iowa Poll of likely Republican caucusgoers. The caucuses are scheduled for Feb. 1, 2016.
The Wisconsin governor is also the No. 2 most popular choice for likely caucusgoers who want an establishment candidate, and he's the No. 2 for those who want an anti-establishment candidate, the poll shows.
"He's in a sweet spot," pollster J. Ann Selzer said. "People who don't want an ultra-conservative think he's OK. People who don't want a moderate think he's OK."

The Koch Kandidate.

(115,683 posts)Respectable-appearing Midwestern governor who seems kind of normal at first glance but is actually somewhere to the right of Darth Vader and is as mean as a snake. Wanker is goofier-looking than Pawlenty because one of his eyes is higher than the other, like Alfred E. Neuman.

(115,683 posts)He's not well-known outside the Midwest; he has even less charisma than Romney; and he's goofy-looking. Also, there were some very sketchy things going on with his fund-raising activities. http://www.politico.com/story/2014/06/scott-walker-campaign-fundraising-108073.html
I doubt he can withstand the extreme scrutiny of a presidential campaign.

(20,885 posts)Remember, we're only talking Republican nominee here. All of them have some stigma. Each will have an expiration date. But the Republican side is about endurance. With the Koch money behind him, his relative anonymity, lack of indictments, and perceived ambiguity should serve him well. He will be the last one standing.
He should get whomped in the presidential contest though.

(15,429 posts)The Koch money only comes into play with the Super PACs.
No campaign committe incapable of raising $1 billion directly into the committee coffers is viable.
On the GOP side, that leaves a single candidate.
Jeb Bush.
No other candidate even rates second tier. Walker is at the top of the third tier.
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)He won't even reach a quarter billion.
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)Only Bush has the network to raise the $1 billion required for the nomination.
Walker is running for Veep and is probably at the top of the list right now. Delivering Wisconsin would shore up the electoral math for the GOP when combined with Florida (Jeb's home state).

(20,885 posts)Money not a problem. I think he can beat Jeb, and Christy, because his flaws are more obscure.

(15,429 posts)Did nobody learn ANYTHING from the 2012 GOP Kandidate Klown Kar??????
Money is a HUGE problem!
Even if the Koch's could get their entire network to donate the maximum amount to the candidate of choice's campaign committee, it wouldn't even be 5% of the require $1 billion.
It requires a HUGE donor network to reach the $1 billion, and the Koch network cannot get that money directly into the hands of any single candidate.
The ONLY candidate with the donor network to raise the needed funds is Jeb Bush. No other candidate comes anywhere near close enough.
Certainly not Scott Walker. He's running for Veep.

(15,429 posts)The 2016 map is incredibly blue and the GOP has to pull of two or three states in order to have a hope of winning, so these things will always factor into the choices made.
Another possibility for Veep is Kasich in Ohio.
StevieM
(10,500 posts)Scott Walker, who I think will lose Wisconsin, regardless of whether or not he wins the general election.
Brian Sandoval, the governor of Nevada, is a possibility for the running-mate. He is Latino and from a swing state.
MohRokTah
(15,429 posts)He doesn't have the fund raising network.
No way does he win the nomination.

(10,500 posts)I think Hillary would beat him...if not for Citizens United. That ruling could turn out to be a game changer--as it was intended to be. It is frightening to think that we live in a country where the law of the land can allow that level of election-buying.

getting my passport ready and other exit preparations made in anticipation of a Walker victory and consolidation of the 1-party state. There will be absolutely NOTHING left here for me or my wife. And Walker's the type to smile in your face while welcoming you to the concentration camps.

(1,850 posts)He won three elections in four years, in spite of the fact that the Wisconsin Dems pulled out ALL the stops to defeat him.
Nothing has stuck to him, in all these years, in spite of the fact that every effort has been made in multiple investigations.
Furthermore, the Armageddon that was predicted if he managed to push through his agenda hasn't happened. Which makes it look like his "reforms" have been successful.
Don't know if he can get the nomination, although he seems to be very popular with the RWNJ base; but if he is nominated, he can most definitely win.

(7,596 posts)Despite not going red in a Presidential election since 1984, three of Wisconsin's last four governors have been Republicans. Tommy fucking Thompson was governor for 14 YEARS! Did anyone take that goofball seriously as a presidential candidate?
So Wisconsin doesn't seem to be as blue as a lot of people think which makes Walker's victories a lot less impressive in retrospect. So why all the excitement from wingnuts about this clown? I simply don't see it.
