Robert Crumb is considered by many to be the single best cartoonist America has ever produced. The creator of counter culture icons like Fritz the Cat, the Keep On Truckin guy and Mr Natural, Mr. Crumb was inducted into the comic book Hall of Fame in 1991, the same year he moved his family to France, where he has resided ever since. Writer Celia Farber reached him at his home in Sauve, France on Friday, January 9, 2015, to talk about the massacre of cartoonists and others in Paris this week.
Celia Farber: Have journalists been calling you today to talk about the assassinations at Charlie Hedbo? Are you willing to talk about it?
Robert Crumb: Liberation wanted me to draw a cartoon, so I did this cartoon for Liberation about it. So far, you are the first American journalist thats asked me to talk about it. Ill talk about it, yeah.
No other journalists have called you? Really?
No, youre the only one. You dont have journalists over there anymore, what they have is public relations people. Thats what they have over in America now. Two-hundred and fifty thousand people in public relations. And a dwindling number of actual reporters and journalists.

(8,846 posts)Crumb is from Cleveland, and back in the early '70s a good friend of mine rented the apartment, just vacated by Crumb's girlfriend. There were drawings all over all the walls.
Him and his room mate spent months gently peeling this stuff off with razor blades.
I wonder if he still has that stuff.

and he still can't speak the fucking language, which is also amusing.
I miss R Crumb and the whole underground comic thing in the 70's.

(20,453 posts)I loved that interview! I was just talking yesterday about R Crumb. It came as a result of our walking through the mall yesterday.
I could get flamed for this, but I spotted some body types who reminded me of the space cadet character he'd draw. They were the simpleton females who'd fall under the spell of the hipsters wanting nothing more than to get into their pants. My husband heard me refer to the person I was spying as, "Honey
Look
R Crumb!" He finally remembered why I said this when I showed him the drawing from this Observer interview.

(41,831 posts)I think he was one of the ones who inspired me to try Pen & Ink when I was in art classes years ago. His details and cross hatching techniques were just amazing to me. I always studied his
style closely just to see how he could flesh out a person or object so well.

(20,166 posts)in general, I have been a huge fan of Crumb's artwork since back in the '70s when I was a kid. His iconic images were everywhere. I even remember seeing commercials for "Fritz the Cat" on TV when it first came out.
As I grew up and got to know him as an artist, my admiration for him grew, even if some of his personal views could make me cringe at times.
The documentary about him made in the '90s, "Crumb", is one of the best films I've ever seen.
