Seventy-three years of war.

Seventy-three years ago today, Japanese forces bombed the American fleet at Pearl Harbor.

We have been at war for every single one of the seventy-three years since.

...and someone's getting paid for it. It ain't you, or me, but that's fact.

The Barbary corsairs, the War of 1812, the Indian wars, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection, Boxer Rebellion, the Punitive Expedition to Mexico, the occupation of Haiti, the occupation of the Dominican Republic, the First World War, the Allied expeditionary force supporting the White Russians in 1918-19...there has never been an extended period in the history of the United States when there was "peace".

"A nation of peace"
"Equal opportunity"
"We don't torture"
"All men are equal under the law"
"We promote democracy"
"Freedom of speech"
"Freedom of the press"
"Freedom to peaceably assemble"
"The right to privacy"

And, many, many, more instances of the same.
