I cannot even believe that I am reading this in the year 2014. Racists should not be able to be police officers, and especially not in areas that are majority POC. I can't even get my head around this kind of blind hatred.
* And here's my edit. I'm not changing the title, I'm not taking the quote out, and I'm not softening the language that the cop used. I'm sorry if you are offended by my quoting him directly - but am shocked that you aren't offended that he used the word - and more focused on me quoting him without using ****** or @%#$^. This is the word he used. Let it be seen. I took the title from a link that showed up in my feed on another site. I copied and pasted to share the article with you all. Again, I'm disappointed that so many of you are focusing on the fact that I quoted him, without censoring, than with the fact that he and his buddies, entrusted to fairly enforce the law, were texting each other these hateful words. I am a white woman. My husband is a POC, and our children are bi-racial. I do not use the word, nor does anyone in my family - and that includes all of my extended family. I have been fighting against racism since I was a kid, and long before I had any personal stake in the issue. But now? Now, my children's lives are on the line, and I want it out there. I want people to see what these people are saying behind closed doors and amongst themselves. They don't have the nerve to say it to our faces, but I will hold them accountable for saying it anywhere and to anyone. This has been sent to jury twice now, and has been voted on to be left alone, twice. If it offends you so much that you can't even focus on the real issue - police discrimination against POC - then I suggest that you find another cause to fight for, because this one is going to roll you over if that's all it takes to get you to the point of disgust and disengagement.

Racists OUTRAGED After Ohio Deputies Suspended For Disgustingly Racist Texts (Screenshots)
Five Ohio deputies have been implicated in sending racist text messages to one another after an anonymous tip was sent to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Montgomery County Sheriffs Office. After an investigation it was revealed the deputies had allegedly sent racist texts to one another between 2011 and 2013 on their personal cellphones.

(53,792 posts)I am merely suggesting that the poster learn a life lesson of the baggage and hate associated with that word.
The word should not be used, IMO, by African Americans either, and especially on this progressive site.
PsychGrad
(239 posts)but thanks for educating me that when I quote someone that I'm "using" their words. Maybe, you could find some anger towards the cop who actually used the word?
PsychGrad
(239 posts)But my children are, and my husband is. Trust me, I hear the word more than you can even fathom. And, I didn't say the word - the cop in this article did. By the way, my husband would like to meet you bc he thinks that threatening women for using a quote is some bullshit.

(53,792 posts)And you should still stop using that word, as should African Americans IMO.
PsychGrad
(239 posts)Do you know what quotes mean?????
brush
(53,792 posts)Since you're new to this PROGRESSIVE SITE maybe you don't know the generally recognized protocol of how to refer to that word, thus, avoiding the hate and baggage associated with it, and therefore being considerate of POC who visit here.
PsychGrad
(239 posts)Been here almost 4 years. I posted a QUOTE. And, I am well aware of the baggage of the word. Perhaps you would like to come over and talk to my young bi-racial children about the baggage since you seem to think I know nothing of it? And, their father, who is a POC - you want to tell him how to handle it too? Seriously, get over yourself.
brush
(53,792 posts)You have a pretty low post count so I thought you might be new.
And as far as getting over myself, you must have noticed I'm not the only one who objected to your posting of the word I would think you'd understand that especially since you're married to a person of color and have children.
If I were married to a Jewish person I certainly would not be posting even quotes of ethnic slurs against him/her without cleaning them up so as not to offend my spouse, and others.
But that's just me.
PsychGrad
(239 posts)I just haven't posted a lot. I have posted recently bc this issue is a big one for me. I do notice that you aren't the only one who objected, but I also notice that many people saw the quote for what it was - a quote. Two jury decisions and several private messages, and several public - stating that it's not my job to censor what the racist cop wrote.
I talked to my husband about it - and he would be offended IF I used the word. I didn't. A cop used the word, and I quoted him. When my husband asked what the tweet was - I said it, out loud, without censoring - and my husband didn't take it personally from ME - but was pretty disgusted with the cop.
The word IS offensive. But, part of the problem is that when we discuss it out in public, we clean it up - so we don't have to see it or hear it. And, I think that is a problem and I think it hinders our progress forward in that - if we never have to see it or hear it - we don't have to feel its ugliness. That ugliness in the pit of our stomachs when we see it or hear it can be the catalyst for change and progress - if we focus that disgust and anger and energy where it needs to go.
In this thread, many are focusing it on me. That's the problem - its focus should be the cops who texted it to each other. If I soften it for them, then people don't get that pit of the stomach ick - they get that obscure and removed from it "well, that's a shame".
You fight the fight the way you see fit, and I (and my family) will fight it our way. We don't soften it up for the racists - nor do we use the word with one another at all. The only time it is heard or said in our house is when quoting people who DO use it.

People have thrown the words "Nazi" and "fascist" around at each other to the point that those words almost don't mean anything anymore. At least, they don't register any particular significance to the listener. Call Ann Coulter a Nazi and see if she gives a rat's ass.
I believe a main reason why African-Americans tend to use the term "nigger" with each other quite a bit, and why so many A-A comedians use it, is because they know that by making it no big deal, they can eventually "wear it out" of its power to wound and hurt. And I believe they're right about that.

(239 posts)I quoted a text from a racist? If that's all it takes to get you to disengage, then our fight is going to be even longer than I have previously imagined. You are giving them all the power of that word by not making people actually SEE it when they use it, or HEAR it when they use it. I don't think that using it will take its power away - but I think censoring it FOR them takes away the power that WE have against it - which is to let people see how ugly it is, to see the ugliness of its usage - and to not soften it so when people see it they don't actually have to see it. We don't have to agree, but you sent it to jury and they voted to leave it alone - so now what? I'm a racist bc I quoted a racist and didn't use ***** in place of the word that light skinned people have used for hundreds of years to insult those with dark skin?
Imo, you need to get a better grasp on this thing. Your personal vendetta against me bc I quoted a racist is weird and your focus is all messed up. You don't like seeing the word? Neither do I. So, how do we stop it from being seen? Not censoring it when it's every day vernacular for so many Americans, that's for damn sure. Pull it out into the light and let its ugliness be seen.

PsychGrad
(239 posts)You're way out in left field. First, you assumed I was white, with no information to back that up. Second, you posted multiple times in the thread telling people that I was white - as if I was a white person USING the word, not quoting it. I'm not sure what your issue is - the cop that texted the word should be where your anger and frustration is. If just SEEING the word typed out is that upsetting to you, I'm not sure how you read any news stories - or look at protest signs - or really, just walk around the earth. If you do indeed have a POC wife, how the hell are you so sensitive to it? At this point in my life, it's thrown at my husband and children so often that it seriously is just par for the course nowadays.
I do not like the word. I do not use the word. But this cop did, and I quoted him. So stop saying that I "USED" the word when I clearly did not and stop trying to turn this around like I'm a racist white person and getting defensive bc someone objected to me using the word. I didn't use the word - look up "use" and then "quote".

Yes, there are racist, bigoted people out there that use that word.
We're not going to be able to confront the hate and malice in our culture if we insist on 'sensitivity' and timidity and censorship. Maybe we need to offend the gentle sensibilities of some liberals and progressives who get upset over what the bigots are really saying and believing in out in real America.
It is ugly and there is no way to pretty it up.
Frankly, I suspect that we are going to be hearing a lot more of this as the Tea Party reactionaries get so riled-up that they cannot help but spew their venom. I agree. There is no way to pretty it up. I'm not doing their work for them, the racists, by letting them throw this damn word around UNTIL it becomes public, then we use N******. Not nearly the same ugliness though, is it?
And, exactly - how do we confront things if we aren't even willing to SEE a word typed out in a quote? It's like, giving a fainting couch to those that can't even see it typed out in a quote - seriously people, I hear this word all the time aimed at my children or my husband. And another poster is right - so many people are focused on the quote that they aren't even discussing the police officers and their behavior or lack of punishment. Nice. Some of you are really backwards about this, seriously. I didn't use the word, this cop did. Aiming your frustration and hate at me is silly and completely unproductive. But okay - never mind - those of us who are a little stronger will fight the fight FOR you. Jesus fucking christ.

(1,415 posts)Exactly. As it SHOULD be, as it was meant as an ASSAULT by the cop. That is WHY the OP used that word. It SHOULDN'T be avoided.

(22,336 posts)The word in the title has a historical context that the word "hate" doesn't have. It smacks of entitelment to dismiss that context and compare it to irrelevant words.
hexola
(4,835 posts)It would be no less outrageous..and just as sinister.
History changes words...
"Gay" has a historical context that it does not have today...
"We'll all feel gay when Johnny Comes Marching Home"
Censoring preserves it's power.

(22,336 posts)are the people those words have been used to dehumanize.
because I'm white, I can't quote it? What if, my life partner is black? What if, my young children are bi-racial? Am I not allowed to stand up and fight the fight for them? Because - I have to do it in the streets constantly - I can't believe I'm having to do it here too simply bc I quoted someone else. There are quotes around it, showing that they are NOT my words.
Seriously people, you are disappointing me beyond belief. I have been reading here for YEARS bc it's a break from the racism I deal with daily IRL. And here, with this - I find, that many of you are so much more concerned with the fact that I quoted someone using a nasty word than you are with the fact that the nasty word was used (by POLICE OFFICERS) in the first place.
Again, I'm not editing it - I'm not deleting it. Look at it, see what this police officer said in all its ugliness, and if you choose to aim your hatred towards me bc of what he said - then so be it, I've been handling this type of shit for years and have a strong back. But, your desire to protect the police officer by softening his words for him is overtaking your common sense.

And I've become a villain for quoting them. I think I may have found part of the problem of why this stuff is still happening. People are very easily thrown off track just by simply seeing the word - they turn away and hide from it.

(31,464 posts)It was a post about language and the meaning of words. Much like the responses in this thread. But a DU jury decided my entire thread should be locked and I got a suspension just for using the so-called "N word" in a thread about language. This place never ceases to amaze me!

Many people today just has empowered that word on DU. All I can do is shed tears that this is acceptable and that people can't or don't want to see the hurt that this word brings just by being written.
I for one will publicity apologize to the African community on DU for even having to see this word printed here.

(62,276 posts)Mind you, I'm on the fence with this one, but no jury would hide it with everyone "discussing" whether or not it was "OK" to use the word. Had the discussion gone on, without the derailment, it may have been hidden. I am bothered that it is a thread title, though, since it is a shitty word to use. I know it is hurtful at such a high context.

(4,835 posts)So why do so many want to protect them with censorship?
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)I have read all kinds of things in my life. One of my favorite authors is Mark Twain. I wouldn't want his work censored, but it was. There is no reason for it mature people should understand the reason people use the words in the context that they use them. The OP is in the context of not protecting cops by sugar coating what they said. It's tragic if people are disturbed more by the OP than the FREAKING RACIST PIGS.
PsychGrad
(239 posts)I can't believe how people are angry at me bc I quoted them. People here are so focused on trying to force me to change his quote that they can't even see the forest for the trees. I'm disappointed, to say the least. As someone who has fought the good fight for years regarding racism that people are acting as if I used the word. I would never use the word, never have, and certainly never will. But, this was a quote - and I thought it needed to be seen, especially since it came from police officers and with the issues we have going on with all of the young black men being murdered by police officers.
I may have to take a break from DU - as others have insisted they must bc I quoted someone - bc I'm not sure that I can be part of a community who is so easily distracted from the issue at hand. Or, part of a community that believes that its' MY job to censor what racist assholes say.

(750 posts)Free speech is a first amendment right. This right does not specify how good the words should be, or define how bad the words cant be.
It is alarming that we all can trash talk and make lies in politics, really stretch the truth in commercials, or be educated by television and Hollywood to pantomime the exact definition of a nigger.
When many think through this divisive characteristic many realize it is the media in clever programming that exploits a lot of that definition without saying the word nigger
If it was talked about fairly most of time the word nigger is not in a lot of conversation. It is rare when that does appear around me, and I avoid it because of the very definition it represents.
However, its not the word nigger it is the definition of the word nigger that is repulsive, and it not only applies to black people it applies to any color.
Blacks do not have priority on it. One of the famous stupid race comments by Eastwood Make my day Punk!!! should be just as disgusting.
Or instead of Bush being a profiteer sacking the treasury creating a war with lies torturing people, or creating the worst economic down turn since the depression we could call Bush a white knuckle nigger.
