Romney blames President Obama for not re-opening drywall factory that closed under Bush

Democrats: Romney wrong about National Gypsum
Filed by Steve Fogarty April 19th, 2012 in BREAKING.

LORAIN – A group of Democrats gathered Thursday morning outside the closed National Gypsum plant in Lorain – a few hours before presidential candidate Mitt Romney was scheduled to make an appearance there – with a simple message: Romney needs to get his facts straight.

Lorain Mayor Chase Ritenauer stood alongside Lorain City Council President Joel Arrendondo and Lorain Councilman Eddie Edwards, D-5th Ward, and they all agreed the Republican Romney’s claims that the plant closed due to President Barack Obama’s failed economic policies is just plain wrong.

“The plant was closed in 2008 — some months after candidate Obama visited during a campaign stop,” Ritenauer said. “It was closed under former President Bush. Mr. Romney needs to stop placing the blame on Obama.”

A collapse of the housing market compounded by speculation and lack of regulations were cited as a major factor leading to the wallboard-making plant’s eventual shutdown, which put 58 people out of work, Ritenauer said.

Rather than erroneously lambaste the president for the plant’s closing as an example of a still-struggling economy, Romney should be focusing on the positive signs of the area’s resurgence such as the recently-announced plans to bring some 450 new jobs and an investment of $85 million in the city’s Republic Steel mill, Ritenauer said.

A stack of drywall that was manufactured in 2008, is seen at the closed National Gypsum drywall factory prior to a campaign rally for Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in Lorain, Ohio, Thursday, April 19, 2012. Romney has visited a factory in suburban Cleveland that closed in 2008 when George W. Bush was still in the White House, and blamed President Barack Obama for failing to reopen it in more than three years in office. Obama visited the plant in the winter of 2008, when it was still open, and used it a backdrop for his own campaign.

Other than someone like Jon Huntsman, when has facts ever mattered to the current crop of GOP Presidential hopefuls?

As a secondary question, when has that stopped Republicans from believing all that dreck?

Watch that become a talking point soon.

The GOP crashes the housing market (remember it was under Bush not Obama that it crashed), allow unchecked drywall imports that turned out to give off toxic gas, prevent any kind of support for the housing market or any legislation to curb excessive imports, and then blame Obama because a drywall factory is still closed?
