(36,974 posts)Also with President Obama being president there will NOT be a republican in the Oval Office that could do shitty things via executive orders.
There is a HUGE difference between having a Democratic president compared to a GOP one,
even when there is no control of the House or Senate.

(80,708 posts)Of course, what's the point of the GOP even bothering to field candidates, or for its gibberring, drooling, creationist base to bother to vote at all...
...when they're going to lose the White House, contraception will still be available to women who won't keep their sinful knees crossed, and TEH GAYS are coming to confiscate their Truck Nutz?
They should just stay home and pray. Really, it's the only sensible move.

(19,178 posts)and Congress. Serious Damage
newspeak
(4,847 posts)they've already caused serious damage with eight horrible years of little boots. And part of the plebes have very short term memory. All repug branches, would just finish us off. Do what they wanted to do get rid of SS, medicare, sell us to the highest bidders and privatize the shite out of the government. Well, it's happening since little boots; it would just be complete. Then, we can all be captive consumers to the corporations, foreign or domestic, won't make a difference. And forget about having even a little voice in this country, because business will rule the land; and forget about safe drinking water, safe food, safe any product; because it will be "buyer beware", no ones looking out for you. We'd be chum for the sharks.
I'll vote-I always vote, but with the bills they're passing against the peoples' interest and the voting suppression bills; I don't hold out much hope for a more compassionate, less greedy, less corrupt environment.

(9,067 posts)With all seriousness....we have to try and we have to keep the pressure on to get congress to start cooperating. Plus all of the other reasons everyone has been stating in this thread. There are good things happening.....

(9,067 posts)Warren up, Brown up, etc. This is not the time to get discouraged. That time has come and gone. Things suck but they will suck worse if voters do not participate and decide not to show Washington that we mean business. Every single vote is important. The right is going to go to polls to defeat Obama and only Obama. They don't give a crap about anything else....which pisses me off to no end. That is the most cynical bullshit and the voters who do that are hurting children, the elderly, their neighbors, themselves, women, men, vets...the list goes on. How can anyone hate that much or want to make a point based on something as singular as that? That alone should get the rest to vote...to support democracy...to support each other....we can then keep working towards making things right again and push for more progress. This is why it is vital that people get interested in their local politics as well. We need to keep inching things forward toward progress.
Dig deep.

(4,569 posts)We had a good Democratic Governor in Janet Napolitano that vetoed the crazy republican state bills that went through our republican dominated legislature. Then she took a better job in President Obama's cabinet and we were left with wacky repub Jan Brewer who has been useless for our state.

(2,737 posts)I understand your reply to me. Believe me, I do not underrate the youth...."Age is not an accomplishment & youth is not a sin" is a motto I've embraced. The youth came out big time in 2008, my youngest daughter made me look twice at Obama...
I'm simply trying to state in obviously an ineffectual way, that the Republicans brought the tsunami on themselves, the wrath of the female voter.
With both a larger than ave. youth & female voter turn-out, me thinks that the media and the poll maker-uppers (I made that term up) is way behind the curve, and they, being the Republicans & corporate controlled media will be taken totally unaware come Nov. 2012.

(80,708 posts)I think, at least, we've got a shot.
If it happens, though, we better not fucking blow our majority, again. Time for REAL leadership. Equality on LGBT marriage rights, an end to the drug war. Legalization of MJ, or at the very least a full reschedule and backing off in leiu of state-by-state decisions. And if the SCOTUS torpedoes the Health Care law, it's time for medicare for all.

(1,033 posts)Here are a few reasons, and this is just the tip of the iceberg:
1. A re-elected Obama will crazy right-wing bills that will inevitably pass under a Republican Congress (if that happens)
2. A re-elected Obama can turn the Supreme Court back to the left, which will have a lasting influence on US policy for a generation.
3. A re-elected Obama will continue to be a great diplomat for the United States of America. Our standing with the rest of the world will continue to improve.
I could go on for hours. Any progressive who falls for the "Woe is me, what's the difference between Obama and Romney?" trap is falling for the same trap the GOP (with the help of Ralph Nader) set in 2000 with the "Woe is me, what's the difference between Bush and Gore?" bullshit. And the result will be equally disastrous.
Parts of the left never cease to amaze me. It's attitudes like this that have stagnated progress in this country post-LBJ. That's why we can't have nice things. It's because the bozos on the right show up in droves to vote and huge swaths of the left convince themselves that it's not even worth it and stay home.
Wanna know why you're not seeing as much progress as you might like? WE'RE NOT VOTING. Make our voices heard, and they'll listen. Sit at home and moan all day, and nothing will happen. Because you're not the ones deciding if they keep their jobs or not.
Fuck.

(1,004 posts)Unless you want Ginsburg (and potentially Kennedy and Breyer) replaced with an Alito clone, then there's no reason at all to worry about Obama winning re-election. There is also an outside chance (very, very outside, but still possible) that Scalia will leave at some point. He just turned 76 and has 25+ years on the Court, fwiw. It would be swell if a Democrat chose his replacement (and again, he'd never, ever, ever, ever leave on his own volition under a Dem president, so like I said, it's an outside chance).
Oh, and one other thing: a Republican majority in both chambers with Romney sitting in the Oval Office. Bye-bye Dept. of ED, HUD, etc.
