Special Rights for Military Members is Law in Florida SB998 HB463 - We Need to Overturn This

This law gives military members under 21 the ability to obtain a firearms permit in Florida, where a non-military citizen cannot obtain such a permit until the age of 21. Ignore the subject matter. Making the military special and superior can be applied to any issue, right, privilege or topic. We need to stop this type of thinking, now.

This form of legislation is dangerous, as it codifies non-military citizens as a form of underclass. All citizens are equal, and we need to overturn this horrible law in federal court.

That doesn't sound like the reason. I think it's because you can be 18 in the military. Honeycombe8 Apr 2012 #9

there is a reason there are bills like this for military families.

We move on average about once every 2 years. Sometimes we get the standard 3 year tour, other times it's a deployment (one year) or military schools (6 months to a year or so). Averages out to 2 years. Moving to different states, sometimes overseas.

We have laws that are designed to make it easier on military families as they move.

Imagine a father buying a rifle for his son - legal in one state - then they get orders to move to another base/post in another state. Where it's no longer legal for the son to have the rifle.

There are a whole slew of laws that are designed to make this necessary nomadic military life less hard on spouses and children dependents.

Trust me, life is already plenty hard as a military dependent. We are grateful for any laws that help us as we move from place to place and try to keep our families together and our lives together.

Loner,

1. Rifles are legally purchased at 18 in every state in the union.

2. Rifles are not covered by concealed weapons permits.

3. A military member's child is not the subject of this legislation.

If you can be in the military and kill people on behalf of the country, it doesn't make sense that you can't buy a gun as a private citizen. Plus, you've been through training.

If your reason were the real reason, the bill would make it legal to buy a gun at age 18 if you move around a lot on behalf of the country, or your company.

when Florida raised the drinking age back up to 21 active duty military were still allowed to drink at 18. So nothing new about Florida making the rules different.

As the legal age for longarms is 18, that's what this is about. The air force does not train in handguns and their training with rifles is just one step above pathetic (one day, the bulk of which is spent waiting around or cleaning the rifle).

If you can handle a rifle you can handle a handgun. Handguns are much easier to use and handle.
