(32,093 posts)I guess it depends on what you mean by "debunked".
A New York Times reporter was there.
Before Mr. Obamas speech ended, a steady trickle of people had departed, leaving some empty seats. And an immigration activist interrupted the speech, holding a sign demanding that #Not1more immigrant be deported. As the crowd bellowed the protester away, Mr. Obama suggested that he should have been protesting the folks that are blocking an immigration overhaul.

(32,093 posts)The OP was about people leaving. The NYT said they did.
KittyWampus
(55,894 posts)let's look at the comment > a steady stream
leaving empty seats.
Now, if people leave OF COURSE THERE ARE EMPTY SEATS.
The only reason to put "empty seats" is if one is trying to make a negative impression.
And all accounts call it a large, overflowing and enthusiastic crowd.
So why point out some people leaving AND point to their "empty seats"?
It falsely characterizes the event in a negative light intentionally. On purpose.
At large events some people always leave towards the end to get out before the mass exodus.

A steady stream of people, meanwhile, left the event shortly after the president began speaking. Many carried signs and wore T-shirts for Brown, and many had waited hours to attend.

I could go on.
And heres a golden oldie: spreading the Daley stole the 1960 election myth. Nixon initiated a recount in Illinois that year which turned up far more voter irregularities downstate than in Chicago. But then, you were a Chicago lifer, so you would already know that. Yet, for some strange reason, choose to ignore that fact.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021434422#post27
former9thward
(32,093 posts)Apparently facts bother you so you create a "defending Reagan" strawman. I notice you did not counter any facts I brought up.
No, Nixon did not initiate a recount. That is false. A candidate can't recount anything. That is done by the state.
Nixon's campaign staff urged him to pursue recounts and challenge the validity of Kennedy's victory in several states, especially in Illinois, Missouri and New Jersey, where large majorities in Catholic precincts handed Kennedy the election.[36] However, Nixon gave a speech three days after the election stating that he would not contest the election.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_1960
Now you will scream I am "defending Nixon". No, just trying to counter make it up as you go along posts.
ieoeja
(9,748 posts)When the recount turned up more irregularites downstate than in Chicago, they cancelled the recount.
And you just fucking did it right in this post! You carry so much fucking Republican water that you can't stop yourself from doing it in response to someone accusing you of it!
We point out the Illinois myth. You find the following:
Nixon's campaign staff urged him to pursue recounts and challenge the validity of Kennedy's victory in several states, especially in Illinois, Missouri and New Jersey, where large majorities in Catholic precincts handed Kennedy the election.[36] However, Nixon gave a speech three days after the election stating that he would not contest the election.[36] The Republican National Chairman, Senator Thruston Ballard Morton of Kentucky, visited Key Biscayne, Florida, where Nixon had taken his family for a vacation, and pushed for a recount.[36] Morton did challenge the results in 11 states,[37] keeping challenges in the courts into the summer of 1961. However, the only result of these challenges was the loss of Hawaii to Kennedy on a recount.
But that is not what you posted. You made the special effort to edit this paragraph to exclude the highlighted portion that included the fact that recounts continued until well after JFK was sworn into office.
You just did it. Again.

(32,093 posts)It is by Gerald Posner a famous plagiarist who tried to stop debate on the Kennedy and King assassinations. He was fired from one publication for plagiarism and he made up quotes and facts in his books.
The Miami New Times also found that Posner "seems to add, subtract, or misattribute quotes" and displayed a series of such "apparently altered or misattributed quotes". For all the examples shown, Posner cited a source article, where an examination of the source showed that the quote given in Posner's writing was either substantially altered (e.g., words added), never said by the subject, misattributed, or used out of context.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerald_Posner
In the IL article Posner cites absolutely nobody for his "recount" and "grand juries" comments.
If you want to rely on that BSer go for it.

(277 posts)While Democrats don't suck, Chicago's Mayor is a different matter. He's not done a good job. As to Reagan, he's been dead for years and was reelected with 49 states. I disagreed with many thing he stood for but, I say it serves no useful purpose to attack him (he left office in the 80s) when there are many Republican office holders to the Right of him who hold office now.
So, I'm more in agreement with you ieoeja.

former9thward
(32,093 posts)You may think that "defense" means ignoring facts. "Ideology" is more important. That is a totalitarian point of view -- not liberal in any respect. That fact that a few people left a speech sends you into a tailspin. So you have to say it never happened or make various excuses for it. So some people left. Who cares? Only people who think Obama is God and it would be impossible for people to leave.
Tarheel_Dem
(31,243 posts)for the story to be true, even after it's been shown that the house was packed, and it was an overflow crowd. Better still, I'm quite interested in why you thought any "Democrat" on a "Democratic" site, devoted to electing "Democrats" would waste one millisecond trying to debunk a story about a former president none of us voted for (or so we've been led to believe).

(856 posts)Thanks for the link Kingofalldems. I provided a link from Crooks & Liars on previous post that explains no one walked out. This is a paragraph from the crooks & liars link:
"So Im going to make a long speech in there. But I had to come to the folks who didnt get a seat. Because this is a group right here that is truly enthusiastic, Obama said to much applause from the excited overflow crowd, which POOL reported included more than a few shrieking women and girls.
President Obama campaigned for gubernatorial candidate Anthony Brown in Maryland Sunday afternoon to a sold out crowd of 8,000, according to the Upper Marlboro Fire Marshall. This meant there were folks waiting in the Wise High School overflow room/gym, so POTUS was kind enough to stop in there and address them before the rally."

There are a percentage of people for whom egress is much easier in advance of the large crowd, people who must attend to children or medical needs and people who simply have someplace to be. It is a natural and constant trait of large scale events. Hell, hundreds leave their favorite sporting events early just because it is hard to get out of the parking lot if you stay to the end.

This has not been "debunked" as some would claim and even the New York Times, as well as other mainstream media outlets have acknowledged this. Yes, I know some deluded people on this site think the mainstream media regularly lies to support a hidden conservative, corporate agenda. However, for this of us without those mental health challenges, these media outlets are a reliable source for this type of information.
Now, most important of all, the only reason that I posted this thread was to express my dismay over such a disrespectful act (walking out on the President) and more so given what a great man he is. Yet, many of the posters just read my headline and not the rest of the message. Typical of the types of people who leavesome of the half baked comments that I saw.
