OR "Occupy" as another poster downthread mentioned, wouldn't surprise me at ALL. When there was talk last Fall about people trying to "co-opt" the Occupy movement, everybody was worried about political parties or commies or whatever and I mentioned the capitalists. THEY are the ones MOST likely and they have a LONG history of co-opting any counterculture thing that becomes popular to sell shit.

So the new version of ALEC probably WILL be named something "populist".

of legislation.

The legitimate one is the National Conference of State Legislatures. If Republicans at the state level attend any other group providing support to state legislators they will have expense showing them attending it and paying membership fees.

ALEC's more agressiive stance on social issues has scared many of it's patrons - they have decided that their issues (union-busting, privitasiation, tax and regulation) have suffered with ALEC's alignment with the Tea Party crowd.
These players (The Smarter Rats), when they find a new alignment of expression, will be sure to do it with a little more savior faire'. Watch for the national Chamber of Commerce undergo a similar exodus.

The companies that are leaving the ALEC fold have not changed their beliefs in any way. They juts want to get away from bad publicity that might interfere with profits.

You're absolutely right. They will all form a new group or ALEC will change it's name and they'll all sign right back up after the publicity blows over.

They don't even care to hide or disguise their moves now a days since they are untouchable due to their wealth.

I'm sorry but I wish these two along with Darth Cheney would just suffer fatal heart attacks.

No, ALEC isn't going away. Churches need to do what they call "education" on the issues and to provide a political means by which the righteous can feel "empowered" against Satan, in order to keep those donations flowing into the collection. Need to feel good about yourself? Fight those evil _________________. Go to church where you'll find lots of people who will share their self-righteous buzzzz "education" about this or that (ALEC) legislation with you.
