This brings the best of religion and leaves the worst out': inside the atheist church hoping to take America by storm - videoAt the weekend, the Sunday Assembly launched new services in 35 cities across the world the largest expansion yet of their 'atheist churches'. Started in January 2013 by British comedians Sanderson Jones and Pippa Evans, the Sunday Assembly seeks to offer the communal, uplifting aspect of church, without any of the God business.
The US has proved one of the most fertile markets for the Sunday Assembly, with 11 cities already hosting events and another 16 launching new services as part of the latest expansion. The Guardian sent Adam Gabbatt to the first service in Cleveland, Ohio, to find out how a godless church works.

It is a video report from the Guardian. A church for atheists sound like a great idea - a sense of community for people with similar belief systems.

(1,832 posts)Evangelical Christian and I sleep in every Sunday. It is a misnomer to think a person can only express their beautiful Christian faith by going to church every week. If I make it to Church twice a year, that is a good year, God could care less if I am in attendance.

The rub is that atheist groups can attract libertarians.

(28,139 posts)I stopped associating with the group because too many of them were idiot libertarians/ one issue people.
Why are they like that/ why do they have such a blind side? It seems that star atheist icons have them nodding their heads in agreement and they therefore keep nodding to everything these icons say. I thought the very essence of being an atheist was the ability of independent rational thought.
