(5,122 posts)No one hates us for our freedom anymore.
We hold more prisoners, by number, than China. More than any country in the world.
We spy on everyone, including our citizens.
We torture.
How many aircraft carriers do we have? No one else even has one. Our military is the largest organization in the world. Bigger than most countries.
We are not the land of the free anymore. But, we sure are the land of the brave.

(11,417 posts)or has aircraft carriers. I am not a supporter of brutality. But not being realistic is no help to anyone.
When I was in Vietnam we were brutal. So was the VC. The war should never have taken place I think but it is important to point out the truth no matter where it takes you.

(10,007 posts)who then get so hopped up on hatred as a result of our butchery that extreme ideology seems to have the answers.
Killing more people generates more hate, which swells the ranks of ISIL. Simple concept, really.

(24,692 posts)democracy (some influence on how their government is run). IOW, they are surprisingly like us.
The violent minority may hate us because it leads to violence which gives them more power. (They don't aspire to take power through elections.) They may genuinely hate us for our liberated women, our relatively open gays, a relatively secular society - but they are a minority. We in the West also have our fundamentalist minority that hates our liberated women, our relatively open gays and our relatively secular society.

(89,249 posts)also the ones who join up terrorist groups are often those who have lived pretty good lives. rarely are they those who have actually been victimized by the US or anyone else.
look at how the worst terrorists in ISIS are British , many who have grown up in pretty well to do comfortable homes and whose parents are often moderates.

It's not like they were standing in line to get the new I-phone and somebody cut their heads off....
I think his point may have been crude but it has some legitimacy.

(8,217 posts)Though like someone else said, most don't hate us.
The ones that do, tend to be the ones directly aversely affected by US interventionist policy.

The US should not try and be the policeman of the world ... and I agree.
What a mess we have made and Repubs could not have done so without the Dems.
